Thumbs down

Hi,

got a knocking noise coming from my front drivers side everytime i go over a speed bump, small hole etc etc. i noticed it a few nights ago and its getting louder and more common. sounds as though it's coming from the suspension area the car is driving fine, no noises when cornering slow or quick so i hope it's one of the bushes.

has anyone had this before and can advise me???

also, if it is one of the bushes is it still ok to drive it??

thanks,

gav..

is it your shock going?sometimes this manifests itself with a loud knocking as the spring is no longer dampned.

ermm... surely the first thing you do is take the wheel off and have a look for any obvious missing bolts ??

Assuming you've tried the "bounce" test to see if your shock is actually working then you've got either

something worn out that needs replacing, or
something falling off/about to fall off..

Changing the shocks on the front of an Impreza is a doddle, anyone with a socket set, a spring compressor and maybe some brake fluid (you may need to bleed the caliper, depending on if you have the "short cut" slots cut into your front shock bracket) can do it.

Ha! Listen to me, I've done it once and am posting like a tech wizard

My WRX 03 has done something similar from new. Commute to work involves 50 speed bumps and over the first 10-20 the suspension sounds like it's loose even though it doesn't feel it through the wheel. Noise goes after a the car's been driven for 2-4 miles.

Is this similar to your problem? I just crank up the hi-fi and take it easy. i do get an odd noise at 61-64 mph though which I'm putting down to lose trim somewhere (sounds like when you rub your finger around the rim of a wine glass - dealer said it's nothing to worry about).

My old MY98 wagon did exactly that, it turned out to be worn anti-roll links - nothing terribly serious, best to get it checked out at the next service (or sooner if you are concerned).
