Why no mesh protector on the bonnet scoops?

Just checked mine, found 5 sparrows, 2 crows, 1 pheasant, 1/2 a fox, and a traffic cone. I thought the power was down a bit..
Being serious though, it does let in alsorts, mine had loads of tiny stones, and some of the vanes were bent over and closed, i had to straighten them out with a small screwdriver.

I have recently noticed that the bonnet air intake is just a hole straight into the engine? Why isn't their a mesh guard on it?
(Can u buy one?)
Any idiot can reach in my 03WRX and mess about with the insides.
Also is it normal for a 03WRX to come with screw holes in the wheel arches where mudflaps should be fitted?

I don't think anyone could do any damage through such a small gap but I could be wrong. The only thing accessable should be the intercooler due to the seal that goes around it.
On my sisters scoob she has mesh across the scoop and it looks good but isn't noticable because it's dark in colour.

That's a good point. On the Sti the scoop is massive so it would be easy for a passing tw*t to throw something in for a "laugh". Does anyone make mesh protectors or would it be a DIY job?

BAH has made his own mesh intercooler guard.
I'm sure he won't mind me posting a picture of his excellent work...
A good idea to protect the i.c. fins against all sorts of road debris.
Sparrows have actually been found on STI 8 intercoolers before!

Jesus, is that one of Bah's as restrictive as it looks?
The trouble with all these things is that they make a noticeable difference to the effectiveness of the intercooler. Sure, getting the fins bent doesn't help either, but at least they can normally be straightened.

Suck out power, though.
The area of the mesh you can remove from the total area of the TMIC - which is too small in the first place.
It's probably a better idea to remove birds/traffic cones/straighten the fins out from time to time instead, unless you want to create the odd running problem
