I have noticed a lot of White Smoke when starting my 99 UK Scoob with full decat from cold. It goes away once everything has warmed up. Would the cold weather coupled with a decat be a cause?

My old celica used to do this when it had a blown head gasket. I'm not saying you have the same problem with your car, but if you remove the oil filler cap and it has white/gray/yellow goo on it, i would be worried

Having said that, my impreza smokes a lot more now that it's cold, because the exhaust fumes contain a lot of water and obviously cold air can't hold as much water so it falls out into drops ('smoke')

Especially when its cold, moisture builds up in the exhaust (condensation) so when you start up, it all gets vapourised away as steam (white smoke). Nothing to worry about imo.

My WRX 03 PPP does this too, if you leave it ticking over on the drive for a few minutes when you first start it this seems to make it a bit worse when you then blip the revs a little (maybe a tad of proper smoke also).

Best to drive off straight away rather than let it warm up on the drive at idle speed as the combustion process produces water until it reaches temperature (dew point) which is not good for cylinder lubrication! Careful driving obviusly fore the first few miles.

It's only condensation, you get it more with the full de cat setup.
I had mine on the rollers at Well Lane & while they were setting it up it looked loke a scene from Stars in there Eyes....... Tonight Matthew....

My W reg did this when one of the rings was on it's way out, not condensation but white smoke, it's pretty easy to tell the difference LOL Hope it's not the ring seal as its a strip down job to fix it... Good Luck !

Thanks for the replies folks. Bits did your car smoke all the time or was it only on startup? I had no noticible smoke during the summer.

Summer - warm damp exhaust hits hot dry atmosphere - Result:Nothing

Winter - warm damp exhaust hits cold atmosphere - Result:White smoke.

The reason it goes away after you have been driving is because the exhaust is then only warm & dry air.So not enough moisture to condense as white smoke.

As a general rule for petrol engines :-

White smoke = water vapour

Blue smoke = burnt oil

Black smoke = incompletely burnt fuel

A bit simplistic but applies in most cases.
