New Buyer Advice
#1
I want to buy a Subaru Impreza. I can't afford to run the Turbo variant so understand that this leaves me the GL or the Sport. I'd like the sport and a model after the late 1997 facelift. How much should I expect to pay for a model in very good condition with no mods? What BHP does the sport kick out? What insurance group is the Sport?
My budget is around £5000, what will that get me?
Any advice would be really appreciated.
Cheers

Welcome and errrrrm..... running costs, the sport is just as expensive to service as the turbo version, you will get better mpg out of the sport and the insurance should be lower, these are about the only benefits you will see unfortunately.

Thanks! A reduction in insurance and MPG is good enough for me! this would be a daily driver (70 miles a day) so this is a pretty important consideration. Also, I don't wanna be replacing a ragged turbo at any point! At the moment I drive a very retro Opel Manta but now need something that requires less of my time to maintain (rust rust rust!)and has the extra doors. The looks of the Impreza sport and the handling reputation put it top of my list. What BHP does the Sport produce?
The only thing I'm gonna miss is the rear-wheel drive drifting I've got used to in the Manta! You can't beat it!

Hi, the sport is around 120 bhp. Give www.subaru.co.uk proven cars a try. Dealer prices but at least you get guarantee. I've had two under this no probs with either of the cars.( wrx and sport). You'll like the sport , we kept ours when got wrx.

Least it gave you an idea of prices. The 120bhp doesnt sound a lot when comparing with turbo but 2.0l engine is more than adequate for the size of car . Insurance is group 13 for sport and group 17 for turbos.

Should you be saying that on a 'Scoob' website??? People get flamed here by turbo owners just for owning a sport, nevermind a Vauxhall!! Haha!
I did consider a Vectra SRi 140 which seems to be about the same price as an Impreza Sport and better performance but it's a rep-mobile and I'd take one look in the mirror and have a mid-life crisis.
BMW? Nah, the world and his wife have got one haven't they. Ask any ******** Nova/Escort boy racer what they hope to upgrade to in the future and they'll all say "A 328i".
I'm pretty sold on the Impreza, Are there many Mods that you can do on the Impreza Sport engine like the infinitely tunable Vauxhall 16v C20XE Engine?

Glad I came across this post, because im in the same boat. I dont do the miles, but I have a baby arriving next year so my 200SX turbo went a couple of months ago in preperation. Im driving a renault 19 at the mo, which i picked up for 600 quid. Its not pretending to be anything other than an 'a to b' car, however I can see getting quite annoyed with the lack of punch, especially if I move jobs (which i may have to to pay for my other half being out of work!)
So, Turbo out of the question, but id like a car that practical, reliable, is average on mpg and insurance but isnt a mondeo clone.
Sport sounds ideal for me. It wont be pretending to be a turbo, If a turbo passes me I wont bother to chase, but im still in a subaru, still enjoying the benefits of a solid car with a nice engine. Hell I may even replace the wheels and exhaust with aftermarket ones just to make it a bit personalised, but it will do the job just fine in every other department.
