Newbie advice to Impreza please
#1
Hi all,
I'm "thinking loosely" about buying an Impreza. I need a car that is sporty but that I can use comfortably for commuting to work.
I noticed the debate on the Sport vs Turbo's above and didn't really get the jest of it. I currently own a N/A MR2 and don't really feel i'm missing out too much on the turbo there.
I wouldn't want to spend any more than 6k and I would not want an estate. Not quite sure on the insurance so that could be an issue that might cause me to avoid the turbo's (My MR2 is grp 15 iir). Would I be best getting a newer N/A or getting an older turbo?
Thanks for any advice chaps.

Terry, pretend you are female and sit back and wait for the avalanche of replies
Id get an insurance quote before you do anything.
Then if favourable for the turbo, get an older one and essentially get it checked over by a professional. For 6k youd prob be looking at up to a n/p reg import or an older uk car. Neither will likely have a warranty worth the paper its written on.
If you dont fancy paying much insurance go for a sport, but drive the both back to back and youll know what i mean about going for the turbo.

gett a turbo if you can, otherwise you will always be thinking what if.
as above, depends what you want from the car.
As an every day runaround / to do highish milage go for the sport.
low miles and lots of love, turbo.
never regretted buying mine, nothing else gets close to it.

agree if performance is yer thing go turbo best bet is have a go in some so you know what the differences are. Not sure about the above costing as usually the decent imports with more power will be up to 20% more than UK cars but if insurance is an issue then UK may be the way i did

I recently sold my old Impreza Sport for £6.5k - it was a V-plate, reg'd Feb 2000 and had covered 72,000 but with 1 year of a 2 year extended unlimited milage warranty still to go and full Subaru Service History (I was second owner). Spec is good for the money when compare to 2.0 16v mondeo and vectra but you don't get bucket seats and you don't get the kick up the back like I am now in my WRX
It had 130bhp with backbox Vs 220+bhp on UK Turbo...but the insurance and running costs (ie petrol) were much better on the Sport. As you are after an everyday runner and aren't too bothered about a turbo, it might be an option to consider.
When I bought it in June 2002, I had about £7k to spend and all the Jap import and old UK turbo's I could have bought with that money were either shagged or in need of expensive work (maybe just looked in the wrong places )
It's up to you fella but if you want more info on the Sport model, have a look at www.imprezasport.net and the owners on there will be able to advice accordingly
Cheers, Jon
Ps. to answer your question!
I chose newer n/a

IMHO...
I have been in a coulpe of NA MR2s and they felt like good fun and pretty quick....
I think you will find a Sport too slow, so only look at the turbo cars - if the total cost of ownership is too much on the turbo cars then look elsewhere.... lots of nice metal about for 6k and I reckon that scoobys get unfairly weighted by the insurance companies.

Don't go for the sport, they are slower than your n/a and less powerful, although you can drive them quicker on the corners.
A newer n/a won't be too different to what you have.
If you can afford to run it, then go for the uk turbo (I would).
