A 'Wax' will have no abrasives, cleaners, etc etc in it and is the last link in the cleaning chain. It will only help protect the paint and help add to the shine..... But don't expect it to 'make' the shine, a good wax will certainly help but alot of it is all in the prep work prior to waxing.
A 'Cleaner Wax' will have some kind of chemical cleaner in it (normally), to help remove any little blemishes etc from the paint and add a protective layer of wax at the same time. Don't expect it to work like a scratch remover though.
From what I gather, the Meguiars Gold Class Wax does have some very light cleaning properties in it also, so in effect can't be layered like a true wax. (according to alot of Americans that like to get the MSDS sheets on things like this and get the full chemical breakdowns etc)
Oh, as for what is best.... Try a few and see what you think. What one person really likes on their black car may look completely different on a blue car. We spend so much on our cars that a bit of dosh on the odd polish or wax isnt that bigger investment in the long run.
Hope this helps a little
