MOT help!
#1
Im looking to get my MY99 Turbo MOT'd this weekend. It is only centre decatted so im not expecting any troubles emmisions wise (H&S downpipe to go on the following weekend!!).
Ive not MOT'd a four wheel drive car before and my local test centre only have a 2WD rolling road for the brake test. They said they do test 4WD cars but take them out on the road to test their brakes. I dont fancy my car been taken out on the road for a 'brake test'.
Are there loads of garages with 4WD facilities?? (im from St.Helens,Merseyside BTW). Anyone on here near St.Helens know of a place to go??
Thanks Mike.

You dont have to do Road Test to Test Brakes on a 4WD Car, They Do not need to Drive the Car. They can test it on there 2 Wheel Brake Tester,
Exhaust i would of thought that it will Fail.

I was under the impression from numerous posts on here that if you have only removed the centre CAT the car should pass as the downpipe CAT is the main one in the system??
I know im thick but how do they test the brakes on the 2WD rolling road?

Whats the fuss about....
Mike, if its a case of no brake test no pass what would you do??
re testing via a 2wd system yes it possible
there is a crude way or a smart way
crude way jack up the rear of car and test the front brakes and then vice versa
smart way place rollers under the non tested wheels...
but in all honesty..........dont bother...
if the MOT stn is worth its salt, they will have a taplow meter(speeling)
all they do is drive at approx 10mph to calibrate it and then drive at approx 45mph and brake without locking up,,, the resulting deceleration gives a force reading and then a pass fail criteria is applied...
its better than the individual system as you cant get failed for one brake having dodgy performance!!!
i think mine took 5 mins tops....
bear in mind the tester has a test to complete and prhaps many more ahead of him..
the garge i use has done numerous scoobs and has had no probs

The tester should be able to use you as his assistant, ie you drive the car and brake when he tells you to...just make sure you check your mirrors As above, this is a less intense test, I'd prefer my car be tested this way but then it's only a Fiesta

Do what Bob.T says .... go with the tester as his assistant!!
I, also, wouldn't be happy letting an MOT tester take my car out on the road - however a Subaru garage is different, they are used to taking these cars out

If you can't trust your garage to test drive your car....then find one that you do trust
Personally I advise on having the car road tested rather than rollers, then there's no way any damage can be done to the 4wd system. I very much doubt that you could 2wd roller test a scoob as the viscous coupling will lock and drive the wheels that are'nt on the rollers.
The road test is only 5mins max, not as if they going to take it for a blast round the lanes for 1/2 an hour, and I'm sure they would have no problem with you accompanying them.
Last time My landy was tested on the road... the taplow meter went off the scale!! Scoob could'nt even come close - say's alot about scooby brakes

It actually states in the 'Testers Manual' that four wheel drive vehicles and axles fitted with Limited slip differentials must NOT be brake roller tested.
Ifin doubt ask your tester before he tests the brakes.(you are allowed to be shown the testers manual if you ask)
steve (authorised examiner/mot tester)

My MY95 is full decat and I took it to a * friendly * garage in Toxteh to get it through the MOT.
When I went to collect it he said it almost passed the emissions so I'd assume with only a centre-decat you shouldn't have any problems.
Take the car out and give it a good thrashing before you go for the test.
Cheers
p.s Think I saw you driving through Rainhill the other day
