Would you interfere with my head - darling?!

Now, I know it may seem like a stupid question from an experienced Scooby driver BUT ......
Is the Impreza 2.0 litre engine an interference engine? ie, do the valves hit the pistons if the timing belt snaps?
Anyone on here had a belt snap? What was the damage? What was the cost? under Warranty or not?
Just wondering?

Its under Warranty - so the other options are out, sadly
How come Bulldog in Twyford want £771 for the 60k service and an Independant can do it for £380?????
Something is badly wrong somewhere - I get the feeling the dealers are bending me over and giving me a right good rodgering, albeit with a polite smile and a thank you sir!!
Would like a definitive answer on whether a MY2000 Impreza Turbo would cause major damage.

Not sure if this helps, but I spent most of the day with my mate doing the cambelt the other week, was talking about the flat-4 engine, and as I recal he was saying that because of the unique design of the engine that if the cam belt does go it wouldnt actually cause the damage like any "standard" engine would do. As in it wouldnt cause any major damage and valves wouldnt hit the pistons.
If anyone can confirm/deny the above please do.
Even though mine didnt really need changing it only cost me a few hours labour and the price of the cambelt, and for the peace of mind costing 90 quid in all I couldnt argue!

your allowed 3 teeth on a turbo i think before valves hit pistons but early 2 litre n/a were ok no damage would be done. early L series subaru used to snap the right hand bank belt (had 2 belts) and they were always ok.

£800?
wtf!
try a indipendant specialist
i had my 60k service with cam belt done by revolution for £400 and that included ngk plus and a K&N pannel filter etc etc
i cant see no problems with having a service done by a specialist if its a good one (except the warrenty if u have one)

My cousin had his STIV serviced at DRJ in wales, with cambelt and new set of pads a little over £380. I'd suggest taking the day off, driving a few miles and saving 3 or £400!

without wishing to seem patronising or sanctimonious (double score words if ever!!!)
welcome to the world of prestige motors (sic)
the dealers argument is if you can afford to buy our car, you can afford our servicing,,,
in reality it sucks, and yes you are being taken for a ride...
if my memory serves me correctly you do not have to be dealer serviced to maintain warranty, i think the clause is that the servicing must be as per dealer specification..
if you can find an independant that can do that then alls well..
re the costs, if you work out what actually gets replaced,
oil/ filter / brake fluid / cam belt/ water / antifreee / spark plugs / air filter / g/box oil / diff oil/
the sum total for this lot is approx £200-350
the rest is labour !!!!!!!!!!!!!
as it has been pointed out before you are being charged for two services .. when infact it is just a service and a cambelt change..
i had my belt done for £170 all in
hope you get a result
