There's a bit of a commotion going on over on the french webclub-subaru forums. According to one well-respected member (who also posts here from time to time), Subaru will offer a free STi8 ECU upgrade to STi7 owners - something to do with problems in the map of the 7's ECU.
This isn't limited to Europe but is to be offered worldwide.
Does anyone in the UK have information on this?
The original french webclub thread is here for those who want to brush up their french

Just reading a bit more on the thread this morning - seems like it's almost, but not quite a recall. The 8's ECU is to be offered because of faults in the 7's ECU...which, if the replacement is not made, may result in the motor going bang.

The thing I never understood was, if the ECU is the same for all of Europe, as it is supposed to be, why are these problems only prevalent in France (aparently)?
Anyone?

Maybe the french are driving the cars too hard? One guy was caught on Monday doing 242kmph (150mph) - fined 750 Euros and lost his licence on the spot.
I don't think it's limited to French cars though as the guy who started the thread is from Switzerland which is where the info is coming from.

Please can you post up or mail me any info you get on this because Subaru germany have not said anything about this and when I asked my dealer he also new nothing about it.
We have an STi7 over here which is getting worse by the day and suabru can't find a fault with it, they will not change the ECU though and I am sure that this ecu problem is the cause of all the problems.
If you can get us any info on what the problem actually is with the sti7 ecu so that we can prep our solicitor before he goes to subaru we would appreciate it.
Cheers
Steve

Well I've just spoken to two Subaru service centres and no one has heard anything about this subject. They said that if there was a recall then the dealers would have to let people know about it through the post (assuming it was bought from a dealer) The only recall they've had on the STI7 was to do with the fuel pump. So I don't know whats going on over in France!

The PPP is not generally available on the continent. I don't think this is a recall at all but a replacement EPU being offered. I'll see if I can get the original author of the thread to post here (in English ) to explain what's going on...

I can honestly say we have heard nothing from Subaru regarding this topic, could just be speculation. If a recall is implemented all owners would be contacted through the selling dealer.

There is an ecu replacement being offered where an STi7 has a severe knock retard problem for no reason, its not a recall iirc, I have looked at the maps and its not really much different, certainly though, in Switzerland, it seems to resolve some aggravating performance issues but does not enhance performance. Richard D will be able to elucidate.

Bob,
Can you confirm or deny that the EU cars have the same ECU code and maps as the UK ones? Is the version code different for the LHD models like on the old shape cars?
