Fed up with Subarus!
#1
Being fortunate enough to have 2 modified Subarus (96&97), when one of them decided to lunch its gearbox in June this year, I thought:
"Right, I'll take the opportunity to really mint it up while it's off the road," so out came the engine, off went the FMIC pipework for chrome plating, along with virtually every bit of loose metal trim I could rip off. I stripped the engine bay down and polished and cleaned everything like new. Ordered and fitted a bigger turbo, had the engine steam cleaned and all metal surfaces polished, converted the fuel rails to parallel feed, started to raise the inlet for front entry conversion etc etc.
In the meantime, been running around in the other one, with a mere 344bhp
Needless to say, a lot of work still needs to be done to the old 96, including fitting a replacement box, so what happens last night?
97 lunched its box too!
I've now got 2 Subarus, neither of which I can drive
The final straw came when I drove the car onto a trailer using the only gear I could get, reverse. The car is lowered so the doors caught on the trailer's mudguards when opened, so I couldn't get out of the car by any of the 4 doors and had to crawl out of the boot!
I jumped off the back of the trailer and proclaimed:
"Right, that's it, I'm getting a bloody Evo!"

I take your point STi ,
Can't expect much sympathy, but it's just typical timing.
Richard,
Must admit I did have to see the funny side. Must have looked strange to other passing drivers, me crawling out of my own boot
In the sticks,
yeah, when I finally get the 96 back, should be pushing 400, hopefully with a good box in it.
Andy,
Yeah, but they just sound like hairdryers. (suit well zipped up)
LOL@RB5. I would have had to climb out the window then, Dukes of Hazard stylee

Would this be the box that you lunched ON THE WAY BACK from having it mapped ?
that's kinda $hit luck.
especially after the clutch was slipping on the last attempt at mapping !
Am i right ?
Ok so my clutch let go in Swindon too.... lets hope my box holds together longer than your has !
What box are you replacing it with ?

Andy,
Sort of. My box did let go on the way back from mapping back in January. But it has blown again since then.... er twice
Must be something to do with the 348lbsft of torque Mr. Rawle gave it
My clutch was ok though. The first symptoms of box grenading was apparent clutch slip but the clutch was a virtually new AP item and has been great since.
But this most recent blow is on the other car which isn't mapped (OEM ECU still)
I'm having another UK box put in as we speak. I just got whatever I could at short notice as I NEED a car.

Hi Kwan,
Yes, this is Nick's old car, but pleased to say, Dave from Jap has just rung me and the car is ready!! How about that for a turnaround.
I'm going to be very careful with this one!
So far the green one has given me no jip really and the only time it's in Jap is when I'm having it upgraded.
I can't do fancy link things, Fuzz.
But you can see both my cars in the features section under "cars" of
www.jap-innovations.co.uk
Full spec are in there but might not be 100% up to date.
I'll mail you.
Cheers
Rich

Make a change Rich, something different. 2 scoobs is silly when you can have the best of both worlds.

I would need a wagon to get out of the boot.. I have had my second gearbox let go on my01. ..
Only thing that is keeping me with Subaru is dealer is Stan Palmers of Carlisle ... So getting great service at mo.. But if i were in another area of country i would change

Jake,
standard UK engine, TD05, uprated top mount etc. etc.
Crypt,
If I could afford to sell one of them, I would, but been down that road before, it would be such a shame. Can't ever sell my bro's car foor obvious reasons, so it would have to be the white one and I've just got too much in it.
Chrisp,
That's a shock actually. I always thought Evo transmissions were bullet proof. You learn something new every day. Makes me feel a bit better actually
Abbylad,
But you musn't have read my earlier post, thanks to the boys @ Jap Innovations it is back on the road already with a new UK box less than 24hrs later. It's a MY00 box and probably won't have done the 90000 miles that my old one had done. It's much quieter with a nicer change to it.
Stephen,
Wow, 2nd box? Thought the 01s were a bit tougher. Thicker casing aren't they? You're not running mega power either are you IIRC?
Cheers
