How do i get the most out of my Scoob?
#1
Hiya, just got my first scooby about a month ago. Its a uk turbo running on a m plate and completly standard. As i've never owned a car capable of real performance before, i'm still learning how to get the most from her. I'm looking for some tips and advice on how to achieve this?
Cheers
Ps. Scoobynet really is the subaru bible!!

slow in fast out on bends, remember all the grip is in the 4wd, so progressive through corners is a must.
tyre choice is key in this area too.
gradually build up to the handling capabilites as they are massive!

agree with checking of fluids reguarly. i am always checking under bonnet and underneath of where car is parked to make sure nothing untoward has developed.
idle the beast after a good thrash - esp when coming into motorway service stations.
sidc faq
is a good place to find out alot of stuff.

When i bought the car the owner was using normal unleaded, which i havce stuck to. Do i have to alter anything or can i swap straight to optimax?
The car came with the factory sticker on the driverside door car telling me about the oil changes and to let her warm up and down.
As for tyres i'm running potenza s-03's front and p6000 rear.
what's the best way of getting the power down, change at? Graduale acceleration or flat? pull off revs etc. I mean if you guna buy a quick car you need to use it, yeh?

get either good year eagle F1's or toyo proxy 1 tyres all round pronto, the pontenzas are awful and mixing and matching tyres is a bad idea!
as for pulling away etc.
if you want to "launch" then about 5k at the biting point and drop the clutch.
be careful with the clutch though as the standard ones can slip and smell 'orrible!
as for changing up, around 5 - 5.5k is plenty in a standard car.

either - i prefer flat!
always run SUL or optimax - if you are unsure of the history of the car, reset the ecu after running a few tanks of the good stuff through.
to do this disconnect the battery earth for half hour or so.

An older UK turbo will run on NUL. It's not recomended here, as it makes the knock correction work quite hard - ie the ignition timing is retarded considerably. Running on Optimax stops this happening so much, so in theory the performance is better.
May be best to reset the ECU using the green and black under dash connectors to get the most out of the Optimax, but it's not essential. There's numerous threads on how to do that - if I get a chance, I'll look one out for you.
The best mod I have made to the car so far was some "advanced" driving lessons from a traffic policeman friend!
As for launches - how long do you want your clutch to last?
Launching at 4000+ RPM is fun, but will wear out mechanical bits over time. You can beat most things by getting it rolling first, then applying the gas - if you're feeling sympathetic to the clutch.

Dnb,
agree with what you say about finding someone who knows what they are up to in a car to show you a trick or two.
get on a track day with an instructor is another option.
regards launch, i lunched the clutch fairly quickly in my car - then again i ain't as sympathetic as Dnb !
however i replaced with one of Excedy's finest and lightened the fly wheel also.
now it is unbelievable and NEVER slips!
recommended for when clutch does die...
