DIY de-cat
#1
i have a 1999 turbo imported from the UK into kenya. the only problem with this scenario is the car is equipped with a catalyst convertor like all UK cars, but has been running on leaded fuel for the last 3 years. it is running fine, but i expect it is causing a lack of free flow in the exhaust and thus reduced power. de-cat exhausts (or anything for scoobys really) are not availble in kenya, so i am thinking of a DIY de-cat with the help a regular welder/exhaust maker. is it ok to simply cut out the catalyst convertors (they are 2 i believe), and replace them with straight through pipes welded in the places the convertors are removed? i have no clue so any help would be appreciated. Also, would this affect the lovely exhaust tone of the car, as if it does, i am not willing to de-cat it because the sound is very beautiful indeed! and if increases the sound, well even better!

I guess the cat is now well and truly dead after that lead intake.
Rather than cut the cat out, why not just break the catalyst element up with a long screwdriver or rod and tip out the remains?
You'll then have a very cheap decat with lots more noise
Wear a mask as the dust while you do it.

Scoobysport's website claims that they've got customers in 42 different countries. I'm they can arrange to ship goods to Kenya for you!

LOL @ get one sent to Nairobi! You must be kidding - normal post gets stolen there, let alone a massive package!
(I know from experience!)
You're better off just removing the entire exhaust system!

I did just that.
Cut open the second cat with an angle grinder, opened it like an Easter egg, took out the cat, and welded it back up.
WARNING. Dont do it in an enclosed shed.
Dont blow through the cat to see how much restriction it
causes
Dont batter it with a hammer to see what the mesh
looks like.
I did and was fcuked for a few weeks, it felt like I d had 500 Benson in one day, wheeze, wheeeze!

so if i can manage, is it ok to simply cut out the catalyst and replace it with a straight through joiner? Also, people have only been talking about the second cat (presume the one near the silencer) what about the other car, where is that? is it a lot harder to de-cat?

You can cut the box open and take out the cat and weld it back up as mentioned above, but you may find it'll give a "tinny" sound from under the car.
I did this when the Cat shattered on my XR3. I later cut out the whole box and welded nice piece of stainless tubing. Worked a treat.
As for scooby noises without cats. With the standard backbox, you'll find it only slightly louder, and more deeper in tone.
