Question

That bit looks like cast iron. Does anyone know if cast iron can be welded?
STILL cheaper, even if it needs specialist help, than having it rplaced at £350 for the part alone

My lad got an alloy frame welded for a trials bike recently, £25 all in. Perfect job.

ABS pickup You should be able to drive it if you remove the ABS fuse but that part's going to need replacing

I thought it looked like you had. Have you tried giving it a tap? Put the wheel back on and wiggle it?

It's not the Hammer or the broken Brakes I'd worry about mate....

It's what your other half will do to you when she finds out you used her Douvet to sit on while you were Spanking your Car with a Mallet....Lol

Thumbs down

Sorry mate but to replace the broken ring, you will have to remove the whole hub carrier.(these do not just tap off!!).
The centre hub will have to be pressed out but it may break/damage the hub bearing.Once the hub is off then you can unbolt the ABS ring.
Refitting means using the press to refit the hub back onto the bearing.

But surely if you drive the wheel assembly will be well out of balance and v. uncomfortable and dangerous?

nah, she'll quickly forget that once she sees the repair bill for the new ABS ring

Iain, I'd get some flowers ordered for her quickstyle or keep the hammer well out of reach from her

Question

OK, silly question, BUT:

Would it be possible to spot weld the broken bit back into place? I can't see why not, as it's not stressed in any way, and carries no weight?

Surely, a good welder would put it back for you, like new, at a fraction of the cost of a new one/repair involving hub removal?

ozzy ,

she's working 'till 9.30 tonight - so i've got till then to get everthing sorted - i'm gonna carry on sorting the brakes out (335mm godspeed conversion) and get it back on the road with the busted abs ring

I can always tell her next week that a rogue stone broke it lol.

not me with a hammer bigger then Thor !

this welding idea could be a good one tho' - all the ring does is go round and round with a sensor aimed at the back of it.

My guess is that if the ring broke that easily then it's not steel and therefore not weldable without specialist equipment (If it's alloy ) I am not sure from the picture what it's made of though

Oh and if you pull the ABS fues my bet is that the broken part is that light it won't make hardly any difference to the balancing and won't make the car dangerous as previously stated.

You'd be best bolting it all back up and gettin it recovered to a garage tbh

To fix it involves pulling the whole knuckle off, pressing the hub out, fitting the new ring then pressing the hub back into the knuckle...I wouldn't do that without replacing the bearing.

I don't mean to be rude but it's a very serious bit of your car....if you **** it up you could finish up on 3 wheels!!

Best of luck

If it is Alloy then it will be weldable but you would probably still have to remove it
