depends where you are driving. I would say with a stock engine you would be best shifting around 7500rpm for max performance in a straight line, but i choose shift points based on what the road is doing, i may shift at 6500rpm if a corner is comming so i wont be near the limit of rpm mid corner and can keep pulling hard through it, other corners i will hold it in 4th to the red line as that gives better balance. If i dont know the road i will shift earlier to guarantee i have power mid corner and dont do a saxo boy.

With say 300BHP and 300lbft ECUTEK remap/decat, you would probably find best shift point is 500rpm lower, to use the midrange torque more.

't all depends.

I Bought an STI 5 Type R Ltd WRC rep( Go on hate me ).

Because I thought it was the best looking Scoob available.

P1 was @ £5000. dearer.

However. If I'd manged to Scrimp and buy a P1.

I would possibly been Happy to keep it fairly standard.

Knowing it was a UK standard Limited edition.

But whadya know. Buy a Jap spec and after that all important Remap.

All scense goes out the window.

You'll end up fightin' them Lawyers for wife and kids /house.

But you may be HAPPY!

GO for it!

Question

excellent article, John was it the R's top speed that was mis quoted ? (redline @ 8250 should give 160+ish) and there were 1000 of the LTD editions made ?

redline isnt 8200rpm, limiter is just over 8000rpm, but the rev counter under reads by 250rpm at the top end. Ideally you should be shifting at 7900rpm true as a max point. Thats why the RPM neadle goes red at 7900rpm, pity that its not acurate.

Page 43. Not all 1000 P1’s were sold straight away, lots sat in showrooms/car lots for months.

Page44. They made 1000 Limited STi5 TypeR’s. The 2 door shell is heavier than the 4 door shell.

Page45. Both cars have the same rear bulkhead design. MPH/1000rpm is 19.4 on the TypeR. Top speed of a TypeR is 158MPH, P1 theoretical top speed is 174MPH (it wont get there, not enough power to overcome drag, they are going to be very similar).

Page48. Utter tosh on the centre diff best being left alone, it is one of the best features of the car and gives huge grip levels if used properly. It isn’t an adjustable front diff lock either; it’s an adjustable centre diff lock. Again top speed is wrong.

Page50. The P1 does not have a revised engine chip to provide a leaner mixture; the ECU map is identical to an STi5 TypeR in terms of fuelling and ignition maps. Not true on them only running on 98RON, P1’s will run on 97RON, STi5’s prefer 98RON plus OB due to differences in the knock correction programming used in the ECU’s. Also the P1 and STi5 provide identical power levels on the same fuel, the IC sprays just help reduce heat soak and improve high ambient temperature power by giving marginally better control of charge temp. The TypeR engine isn’t smoother and more eager to rev, its identical, what the journalist was noting was the effect of the lower gearing. He wasn’t driving fast enough if he only faded the brakes once.

The conclusion is correct though.

Slightly off topic, but, what is the best time (rpm's) to change gear to maximise acceleration?
I don't feel I get the best out of my Type R if I hold it to the red line. Changing at 6,500 - 7000rpm seems to keep it pulling stronger than holding to the red line.
What are your experiences John?

When they were saying about the type r more easier reving, I think they mean't that because the rev counter is bigger on the type r, it just looks as if it flows round better.
