The follwing was sent to me, I havent yet checked the validity.

For those of us driving around the M25 - out of necessity rather
than pleasure - the following may be of interest.

As from 7th May, all speed cameras (within the M25 area) are being
taken over by the Department of the Environment and all will be eventually active and set at zero tolerance - eg. in a 40mph zone the cameras will be set to trigger at 41/42mph rather than - as now - approx. 50mph.

If you are feeling kindly disposed, please pass this information on.

Wink

I received this Email some days ago. I think its just general scare tactics. If all cameras are set 1 - 2 mph over the indicated speed limit then this would not account for variations in Speedo tolerances. I travel on the surrey section of the M25 evey day (M40 - M3) each gantry has a camera (supposidly) and from experience I would have to say that they would catch eveybody on the motorway

Another good example is the A2 from B`heath to M25.

Five or six camera`s on both sides. Commute every day - Pass them more than 75 no problem.

In fact I reckon you need to be doing 100 or more to trigger!

Thumbs up

In my experience it's rare for more than 2 or 3 cameras to be switched on on the southwest corner of the M25, only problem is those without a detector don't know it and slow down anyway!

Hmm,

speedo tolerance must never tell you that you are going slower than you are (they allowed to say you are going faster than you are!)

So Zero tolerance will work

Do they realise the amount of paperwork that they are going to generate !!!

They will only be able to prosicute the people going way over the speed limit - therefore whats the difference in that to having the cameras set at a higher tolerance ???

Talking

I'm sure more of this zero tolerance 'propaganda' was fired around the press a couple of months back. If I remember rightly our friend TwoJags' (chauffeur driving) was actually lasered by a journo for doing 41-42 in a 40 the day after the story broke (Unfortunately, I'm talking laser CAMERA ). Top Gear (think it was Top Gear?) also did an article on Speedo Accuracy, and a couple of the group of new cars they tested did actually underread.

Oh how my memory fails me.

Sounds like the usual spam. But anyway, as far as generating paperwork - my understanding is that its all electronic now (on that M25 section) from taking the picture to printing out a ticket.

In fact if I remember right - the bottleneck was not the amount of speeding traffic that could be photographed, but that the printer(s) couldn't print the tickets fast enough

Regards
James

As Ro says, booking everyone doing marginally over the limit would kill them with work. Speedo's are acurate enough either.

I've always understood that the way to see if the cameras on the next gantry are live, is to look for a small antenna on the left hand end for transmitting the pictures. Any of you regular M25 users (poor buggers!) care to check / comment on this?

Cheers,

Chris.
