Since selling my MY00 hasn't been a resounding sucess, she is going to the dealers as a trade-in!!

I have been to see a couple of P1's and STI 8's from main dealers but can't decide which one to opt for.

A '03 plate STI 8 PPP will cost circa £40 a month more than a P1 so the price isn't really a deciding factor.

The STI has 3 years of warranty, but the P1 can be extended if the dealer is in a very good mood!

I like the look of both cars pretty equally, and I assume they'll perform similarily.

I should say that at this time I haven't test drove either one yet, hopefully tomorrow.

Other than what one I prefer driving, do you have any other thoughts/ideas that could influence me one way or the other?

Cheers

Talizman

P.S. Theres a lovely looking RS Focus sitting there too, just asking to be ragged! <flame suit on>

The P1 is one car i'd love but if i had the finances then the choice would be very tough.
As there is no PPP for the P1 you will be limited to 276BHP but if you get an 8 then over 300 can be had with warentee
My heart says P1 but my head says 8

Kane, unfortunately, since the sale of mine hasn' been a resounding sucess, I'll be trading her in so the dealers have me by the short and curlies!

Rotty, £23k is the deal I've negotiated so the difference between a MY00 P1 and a MY03 STI8 in £40 a month so cash isn't really a deciding factor.

Warranty can be extended on P1 (I believe) so I guess it comes down to which one drives best, and how many doors I want.

i test drove both p1 and sti8 ppp at stan palmers last week, i have a terzo and driving the p1 altough quite a bit quicker felt the same as driving my own and at another 11 grand on top of mine i needed more than a bit more performance so i took out the 8 and its a compleatly different animal, miles better build quality great performance and made the classic feel really dated so i went for the 8 just cant wait to pick it up now

The Verdict

I went to Stan Palmers today and test drove the P1 and the STI8.

Getting out of my 255 bhp Classic into a P1, didn't really feel different enough for me.

Don't get me wrong, the P1 pulled very nicely, with an effortless ease about it, piling up rapid speeds, but I kept forgetting that I wasn't driving my car.

Plus, the P1 with 30k miles had more rattles than Mothercare, and the typical Jap build quality came into question.

It handled very nicely, and you can see the difference that the solid rear bulkhead, strut brace and inverted struts make to the handling, but it felt quite 'samey'.

Ian then took me out in the STI 8 PPP. Holy $hit!!!!!

This machine was an utter animal, the only car that I can say that truly gave me butterflies since the first time I sat in a Scoob, all those years ago!

Almost NO lag, instant spool up, power in every gear, into 3 figures plus on roads that you wouldn't think possible.

This is truly a sorted car, and it made the P1 seem really dated.

I still love the classics, but this blob eyed pretender has won my affections 100%.

You can keep yer P1's!

IMHO the P1 is such a lovely car and will always remain a place in my heart for one of the best classics ever but having the choice I would delv into the new age with an 8! having driven both, you will also feel more rewarded with the newness and refined quality.
