Question

I'm trying to sell my scooby and not having as much interest as I'd have expected. The ad link is below....

I don't think I'm asking too much money and think its a great car.

Please give me your comments... (If you've any REALLY negative thoughts as to why its not selling please mail me offline!)

I guess the car market is dead.....I'm not even getting any interest from Auto Trader and where are the usual tyre kickers ??

very depressing isn't it.

there are people out there buying 1.8 Focus's for more than this - they really don't know what they're missing!

I reckon there maybe a few reasons...

1) Dealers are pricing similar UK turbos for £9995 (obviously this isnt the eventual selling price either)

2) Private buyers would rather spend another £500+ and get the peace of mind of a warranty, new mot, service, hpi, valet.

3) Part-ex is available from dealers.

All good reasons to buy from a dealer and maybe the only good reason for buying private.... is the price. All IMHO of course.

OK I can accept that but I've recently seen a car very similar to mine on a dealers forecourt for £13995, I would probably accept £11k for mine lets say that the dealer lets it go for £13500 I'd say that £2.5k is a hell of an incentive to buy private.

I agree.

Boro - I do see where you're coming from warrenty and the like but I still think mine reasonably priced.

I have looked at the Subaru.co.uk used cars section and there are 98 S plates for 10k but they are all pre-face lift and have nasty wheels, no colour coding and most have higher milage than mine, no tracker, no CD etc....

I would take 9k so thats a grand less and you get phat rims, extra silver bits and top security!!

I see your point lads but we all know add-on's dont usually add on to the price.

Best bet is to take them off and sell them privately.

Prices are tooooo dear.
people could get a jap sti which is a hell of a lot quicker for around 8k.
And even better a 2dr sti for what your asking!
The bottoms gone for the 4drs,get rid while you can.

Appriciate your input but where are you getting these prices from??

I think mine is price accourding to the market and its in line with those on here, in Autotrader and at Dealerships.

Which Jap versions???

The ones I can find are from import companies and are silly money for 96 models.

So what would you price my car at "realistically"??

That's the problem. People on here, and on AutoTrader, are over-pricing their cars. I tried to sell my RB5 and followed the price guide from these two sites and didn't even get a single interest. While I think the car is worth £14k the market says £10k - as a result I have decided to not to sell!

The main problem is one of expectation! - until you actualy come to sell your car most of us are living in fantasy land!!

doobie put in in for around £6500 to £7000, you may get a little interest.
The problem is people want a wrx or sti if they are going to get a sub.

Parker price guide (which is generally on the cheap side) prices a 99S in vgc at £9250.00. If I'm starting mine at £9200 then surely I'm being realistic?

I got my info/prices from www.subaru.co.uk. If your askin £9200 i guess you may take £9000 ?

A dealer asks £9995 id expect to pay £9495 maybe a little more with no p/x.

So yours for £9000ish or a dealers for £9495ish. I know yours is slightly modded but as ive said you dont really get the added value of these on top of the price do u?

Just to give you further proof of dealer prices. Heres this months Glass's Guide REATIL prices...

98/R - 56000miles - £8600
98/S - 52000miles - £9100
99/S - 49000miles - £9400 *
99/T - 48000miles - £9750
99/V - 44000miles - £10275

Im not sayin yours wont sell but if it isnt selling then this could be one of the many reasons. Good luck anyway

Talking

With Scoobynet you are selling to very gen'd up enthusiasts who (generally speaking) would rather have a 2 door Import. Your car is more suited to the newbie who probably does not care for meets, etc and so they go to the dealer.

Same newbie probably is scared of what is potentially a modded car and so would rather pay a dealer more in order to get what we know is less car

The above is based on my personal experiences over the last 1.5 years of Impreza ownership and Scoobynet surfing and having (briefly) worked for a Subaru dealership.

As Boro said, take your mods off and sell privately then take your standard 4 door to a dealer and get them to either buy it off you (no PX) or ask them to sell it for you - the dealer will do this as they make money not only out of the margin on the sale but in selling a warranty and the profit of the new customers finance...

This wil leave you with the cash (worked for me anyway )

Doobie, FWIW this would be my solution.

Take off your mods, fit any standard parts u have, keep the mods until you get someone interested and offer them to the purchaser for a bit extra. If he wants the car as cheap as possible then sell the mods on here or similar.

You need to price your scoob somewhere in between TRADE and RETAIL.

So heres both prices so you get an idea.

99/S UK TURBO 4DR - 54000MILES

TRADE - £7500
RETAIL - £9400

DIFFERENCE - £1900 (sounds alot but it isnt on a scoob)

Half the difference - £950

Add half the difference to TRADE

EQUALS = £8450 (this is what i think your car is worth minus mods)

All of this is my honest opinion and different geographical areas mean different prices. But rule of thumb thats how it works. Hope this helps.

Cheers Boro.

To be honest I think I'd take £8500 for it inc wheels, stereo et al.

Problem is, as quick as I advertise it, the price keeps dropping!

I paid £10900 last Nov - and that was private not trade! Maybe I was stitched a bit but the drop in price has been shocking.

Wink

Add another £500 to this i.e. £8995 then you have a drop pitch...when the prospective buyer haggles to £8000 you meet half way in middle at £8500 and they are happy and you are happy as they feel they have got a bargain but you know you got what you wanted for it

I agree depriciation can be the most expensive part of owning a scooby, i paid £10k for mine a year ago and that was TRADE price then. Trade price today is £6775 Ive probably spend a couple of grand on mods which i know i wont get back if i sell with the car.

From a psychological point of view, if your car price is say £9200 but you'd take £8500 you should be pricing it like this..

£9200 becomes £8995

£8500 becomes £8495

Only small differences but you NEVER see a car on a dealers forecourt for round figures. I know i never would. All my cars end in £**95

...thats exactly my thinking. So by pricing it currently at 9200 I spose I'm not that far off.

Also, the one addition to the car which I feel does add value is the tracker. They cost 500+ to fit so gotta be worth having.

As a matter of interest... November 2002 Glass's Guide price was...

99/S 43000miles TRADE £10625 RETAIL £12525

And that months depreciation was a MASSIVE £425

alternatively, if someone can come up with a quick way of getting hold of 6k to pay the loan company off I'll be able to keep the car!!!

Got a mate in the car business and he says no one is selling anything at the moment it is all very quiet I guess we have to sit it out...........
