The rear brakes on my MY00 started doing the "Metal tag against the disk" thing. Best I change the pads then i thought. Wonder how much they cost? Not had to buy any before so.......who knows!
I looked on a few web sites and phoned a few places and found that most folk wanted to sell me "designer" pads of one sort or the other. Which is fine except we are talking about rear pads here and the OE ones had lasted me nearly 60k miles. I didn't see the need to have owt expensive.
Most of the designer pads were between £87 and £144 plus VAT etc.
I finally got them from a recommendation off of scoobynet £35
You wanna know how much the feckin dealer wanted? £189 + VAT he even tried to feed me the "It'll preserve ya warranty sir" bollox.
Didn't have the heart to tell him that they'd replaced my clutch while the car was fully decatted! No warranty issues there
At least Dick Turpin wore a bloody mask!!!!

Thats why I'm spec'ing pads elsewhere for my sport. Pads for my 205 gti were only £35 a set of greenstuff!!!! There is no way on this planet I'm paying 80 quid for a set of oem's.

The other thing is that brake discs and pads are classed as perishable (sp?!) items and unless a manufacturing fault is present, do not get replaced under warranty or effect the warranty on the whole car... hmm...

Mike, i couldnt agree more, i was at the reception of my dealers when an unsuspecting Scoob owner complained that he couldnt get rear brakes for his MY00 anywhere and was all set to cough up £90+ when i put him in touch with (You know who) and he bought the dealer only pads (NOT) for £35 delivered.
Ohh the dealer wasnt happy i blew them out the water.

One of them yes
I nearly passed out to pay any further attention
Just think right, out of god knows how many scooby owners out there, maybe 25% of us have enough knowledge of the brand and know enough contacts to be able to see right through the greedy dealer network.
What about the other 75%. Poor Ba5tards
There are many examples of this type of interaction, you know, where the dealer assumes that you are a total and utter plumb.
"You have to buy a whole MAF and Airbox assembly..."
"Heatshields don't come off, we have to weld it..."
"Are you sure your car judders? That's unusual, shall we inspect it for you and charge you anyway?"
"They all do that sir"
"We'll stick our diagnostic box on, that'll tell us if your MAF is at fault...."
"Fit OE only otherwise your warranty MAY be affected...."
"The UK cars are not noticably slower than the imports..."
"You'll not find many garages that will touch imports...."
"Prodrive have stated....blah...blah...blah...."
"Are you sure? S202? And that's a subaru is it? "
"RB5, Terzo, Catalunya.......yeah they are all imports, that's why we don't have any here!"
These are just a few choice statements that i've been fed by various dealers over the last 3 years. Thank god for scoobynet, otherwise I could have quite easily ended up in that ripped off 75%.
The list is endless

Mikey,
I got some prices for the OE stuff back in January
Front Discs £264.52
Front Pads £115.61
Rear Discs £218.67
Rear Pads £71.44
All inc. VAT, but obviously fitting is on top. These are for a MY99/00.
I think your Dealer has given you a price for the rear discs, not the pads.
I've just bought some OE pads from Godspeed for £30 inc.VAT and a set of his lovely grooved & vented discs for £145 inc.VAT.
No way was a paying Dealer prices and I even fitted them myself.

I need new pads all round and new front disks pronto for my MY99 and looking at this thread I'll be sourcing my own. How easy are they to fit? The pads look like they are easy but what about the discs? Anyone know of a step by step fitting guide?

They are very easy to replace. All you need is a trolley jack and some axle stands.
I didn't replaced my fronts since I went for the Godspeed upgrade and was getting some braided hoses and new fluid. Never done that before and didn't fancy taking the chance bleeding the brakes. After watching the lads at my local garage bleed the brakes it looked very easy. Having said that there was two of them doing it, so an extra pair of hands would be a great help.
Anyway, back to the point. If you're just replacing the pads and discs, then it's very easy on the fronts.
The rears are also easy, but the only tricky part involves the handbrake. If the rear discs haven't been off the car (mine were the originals on my MY99), then have a tendancy to stick. When I tried mine I had to man-handle the discs off the car and almost broke some of the handbrake parts (fortunately they aren't too expensive if you do).
Then someone pointed out that there is a adjuster behind the rear wheel to loosen the handbrake shoes and avoid them jamming. Having a big can of brake cleaner also helps loosen them off if they're a bit rusty.
I've put up the procedures I went through to replace my rear discs.
The procedure is more or less the same for the fronts.

Just had a chat with my dealer and he said 350 all in for new front disks and new pads all round fitted, cheaper than I was expecting and they'll do the prodrive pads and disks for 500 so I'm going to go for them.

For a 60K service, my dealer charged me £170 labour (not inc vat!), and they reported a "Knocking noise from the engine".
I returned there this morning, coz I'd discovered why it was knocking.
Muppets hadn't refitted my induction system properly and it was rattling. I'd have done it myself, but they'd lost the washer and nut and there were three big scratches on the drivers side front wing.
Raised voice and gestures, followed by a fix, polish and promise of 20% off next service.
I *may* return there to redeem that 20%...

Well my 60K service just cost me £528. £220 was labour and £120 for a new timing belt. They also replaced by key fob batteries (£5), but I'd just replaced them myself a week or so earlier.
They also used their own spark plugs even though I left a new set of NGK 's in the car for them.

I asked my local dealer how much it would cost to fit a downpipe. He refused to do it unless I purchased a new heatshield because 'the heatshield cracks and I'll be back at the garage complaining about the noise'.
Gonna do it myself.
The only thing I'd ever buy from my dealer is an oil filter.

Just to add, another dealer/subaru specialist recommended off here said I should expect to pay another £50 on top of the downpipe fitting because often the 'doughnut' from downpipe to centre section buggers up. On further questioning he changed his story from 'often' to 'very rarely'. Eitherway he lost my custom for trying to pull a fast one.
