Watch out for sayings like "Me love you long time, 5 dolla 5 dolla"!
Bloke in work has just returned from said place this week, he was very surprised at the price of things - expensive.
He was under the impression that electronic and car accessory items would be quite a lot cheaper then the UK, it appears not however.

I got back two weeks ago, and the only advice I can give you is to take a *lot* of dosh! Things out there are *expensive*, even compared to London The only thing that was cheap was Mc Donalds (Incidentically, also the only thing that didn't give me the runs )
Try to get out of the bigger cities and go to e.g. Kamakura and Odabawara outside of Tokyo. Great places

A pal of mine is a director of a large insurance company out there, rather bizarrely when on his business trips to Tokyo he comes back with bottle of Dom Perignon @ £40, quite remarkable when you consider how much everything else is, e.g. Pewter Tankard of Beer at Ginza SonyCentre pub @ £8 a pop.
Get a JR railcard, one decent length trip on the Shinkansen (Bullet trains) will pay for it and you can keep using it over and over.
Also if over there when the F1 is on, then pop down to Suzuka - nearest city Nagoya and then local trains, don't believe all the hype - you can buy a ticket on the day!
Have Fun!
