Buy one of them magnets on the end of a telescopic ple (like a radio aerial) they're only cheap and you can reclaim all them nuts, washers etc. that disappear into the engine bay

will do, but cant even see the damned thing, let alone get a magnetic-pole-radio-ariel-like thing in to retreive it
ah well, best not have the radio on on the drive home, listening for a screwdriver getting wedged somewhere bad
cheers for the tip

I hate to be a killjoy, but the magnet thingy will be "fun". Y'see, the majority of things in your engine bay will stick to a magnet...
Turn the car upside down and shake it - it'll fall out

I've left my locking wheel nut adaptor on a nut and driven for 20 minutes then spent another hour or so looking for it, retraced my route everything, then thought "i'll just check the wheel" DOH!

Could try driving down the road sedatly and slamming on the brakes, hopefully whatever is on the tray will slide to the front and you'll be able to get at it. Could also fall out too!
Otherwise
I think you may just be able to drop the tray down at the front, two 14mm bolts at the front and two 8mm (i think) in the wheel arches, but drop it down carefully.... you don't want the back bit comming unclipped - you'll need a ramp to put it back on if that happens.
I remember with my XR3, I lost my long nose pliers, 3months later I happened to open the bonnet for something and there they were on top of the one shock absorber Also cured an odd rattle I had for 3months too

once the tears have stopped I will go and buy a new screwdriver head
can just imagine the police statement after a hideous 4 car pile up in town, "well officer, the lads on Scoobynet told me to slam on my brakes suddenly, I was looking for my screwdriver head honest!!"
