Was 18 when i got my MY 98 Turbo 2000. Insurance was a nightmare, had to get special cover as named driver on parents insurance. Now older - not by much though - and its no problem. 03' WRX under £800, STI UK PPP - under £1k.

A little warning for those thinking of doing what ralf has done before.....
Its illegal, the owner of the car has to be the insurer of it, having a named driver on someone elses policy is fraud and i think that gets you 5+ years in jail nowerdays

I take it you mean that the insurance policy holder has to be the main driver?
Even still, I'm quite sure that if asked, Ralf would say that his parents were the "main drivers" and that he was a "named driver" on the policy so that he could use the car on occasion...
It'd be very hard to prove that he was the main driver whilst being a named driver! Short of 24 hour surveillance, the insurers couldn't prove a thing.
As for getting time in jail, extremely unlikely, and as for "5+ years"....simply ridiculous.

I would seriously like to know who insured you guys at age 17 and 18 on an Impreza!!! No insurance company (and I tried 40) would touch me until 20. With regard to the post on the Owner of the car has to be the main insurer, that is correct. If you're not then it's now illegal!
Am 21 and insured with Tesco - industry best at the moment I've been told

Incorrect mate, its not illegal to be the owner of a vehicle and at the same time be the second driver on the policy.
The owner/keeper does not have to be the main insurer.
The policy holder does not even have to be the main driver
As long as the car is insured and the main driver declared, everything is cool.
If parents insure a car with junior on it, the insurers will price the policy according to the youngest driver or whoever the main driver is, whatever is highest risk/dearer.
Personally, I have 2 cars insured in my name; on the Scoob I am the main driver, and on the Cup I am the second driver with the missus being the main driver.
The $hit would only hit the fan if the insurers find out that you have been the main driver of a car, when you have told them that you are only an "occasional" driver.
Anyway, Ralf was insured as a second driver on parents policy so the premium will still have been a good bit higher than had he not been on it.
If they found out that he was the main driver, he'd have to tell porkies and deny it.... not that that would happen!

Not bad considering that everyone says young drivers cause all the accident eh?
I suppose 24 is'nt young anymore , but I still recall everyone saying I was going to stuff my UK turbo into a hedge backwards when I bought it, 3 years on still yet to bump it.
