Hiya all,have been a fairly regular reader and enjoy the friendly banter.
I would however like to ask all regulars a serious question regarding blanking out
the door locks.
I ask because last thurs 04/05 while my car(MY95WRX)was parked at work,the driver's door lock was attacked with a screwdriver,which has slightly pushed in handle area,but has totally mashed up the lock barrel.This has rendered the diver's door unlockable.
As I would like to avoid this happening again
I would like to asked would it be possible to have lock barrels blanked/removed and have the central locking operate from the alarm (autowatch160Li/T).
Any assistance would be much appreciated as
the car is having to stay at home and not getting the freedom it deserves.

Sorry to hear about that Mark.

I know it used to be done all the time on MKII Golfs. Depends how much you trust your alarm. I've got the same and would trust it.

Why don't you try a dealer or more likely a ICE installer.

You could try and get them to fit small C4 charges shaped like handles. Obviously you'll be using the remote so anyone fiddling with the handles gets a nasty shock. Ha ha

It gives an altogether different meaning to "dis-arming your alarm!"

Normally a remote opener (using a cable) is hidden somewhere externally to the car, like under bumper or something. Will open a door, but set off alarm, just in case alarm stops responding.

Best to get them welded up, then filled sprayed etc, to do it well takes time, but looks good.

Never seen it on a scoob. Now Im wondering, are the locks in the handles? (Never used the key!) if they are, the trick is to try to find a handle that is the same, but without the key hole in it. Often back doors, or another model in the range will have the same basic handle without the key hole, so just get them swapped.

Keys are in the handles (found out as I had a 2.0 GL loan car last night ). Nice idea, saves loads of body filler & spray paint.

I have the AutoWatch 160RLi fitted on my MY94 WRX Wagon and it's setup to remote lock and alarm the car, so the alarm can handle this interaction with the CL.

The same thing happened to me a couple of years ago to my RS Turbo. They made a real mess of the door so I decided to have the locks removed (it had central locking).

My local bodyshop did the work. They removed the lock barrels and welded a strip of metal across the holes and bent the top through 90 degrees. This prevented the classic breakin technique - a metal rod with a hooked end inserted between the door window and rubber.
When it was finished it looked great (cleaner look) and made the car more secure. Well, as secure as a RS Turbo can be!

I'd say do and if the alarm fails then break a window.

But seriously thanks,it sounds like it may
be an idea to change the handles to rear
passenger type and lock using alarm.
Please keep em coming,as I will be seeing what the place I got the car from has to say
on the subject on sat.

A scooby dealer South of Birmngham ( Andrew Burt in Solihull? )will blank the locks.... not sure about imports though.

What about a Barrier Deadlock to put them off?

To all who have contributed so far.
I went to find out what I could do with my
locks on sat.
Man at garage phoned Subaru up and they claim
that rear handles cannot be swapped to front
door positions
So am having the barrels blanked and remote
locking fitted.
Iwould be interested to hear if anyone has
done a door handle rear type fitted to front
recently and was it difficult.
Man at garage said it was an interesting option,but I opted for the easy
way first

When I had my 5-door I had the driver's lock punched when staying overnight in the Birmingham Metropole. Another guest had his STI nicked at the same time (quite common for Scoobies to be nicked there so the cops told me). It was the Clifford that stopped them at the end of the day. They did however empty the contents of the car, including my dress clothes. All this with a security guard on the car park.

Cost of replacing the lock and pulling out the panel where it was pushed in - £200. The locks are c**p and can bypassed with a screwdriver and a small lump hammer. If they want in, they will get in. Its keeping the cost of any damage down and some re-enforcement behind the locks to stop the panel being pushed in would be a good start as that was the most expensive bit of the repair.

I can second the comments made by Edward H. Andrew Burt (Subaru Dealer in Wootton Wawen south of Birmingham) will fit door lock blanks and a Barrier Deadlock for the gearbox.

I for one thought it was worth having both done.
