Just bought 1993 wrx import(how much fun when your 21)after getting away from escort rs turbos!Really pleased with it but you know how it is getting used to the performance to quick,just ordered induction kit and exhaust will be coming soon.What do i have to do before i can turn the boost up? I know loads about rs turbos but not a great deal about imprezas,is it the same way with actuators and bleed valves and chip then obviously uprated intercooler as rs turbos or not,how do i lose the speed restrictur acording to my speedo its about 120 mph but im sure that is 112mph.What boost pressure do they run standard,and what bhp should it be standard. thanks in advance just trying to get as much info as possible behind me. cheers ppl see you around

Welcome to the world of Scoobies. Only thing I can tell you for certain is that your car should be putting out about 240bhp as standard. Try a search for other information as nearly every question has been asked before. Also have a look at www.sidc.co.uk as this has some useful info.

As far as I know, boost as standard is approx 0.6-0.8bar.

I know that scoobs can be a bit sensitive to induction kits too. If I remember correctly, the MAF doesn't respond nicely giving inappropriate amounts of fuel/air to the engine.

MAF failure is not good either.

bolt a de-cat down pipe on, better spool up, makes noise and frees up more horses & torque.
Do a search on "scoobyecu"
Stay away from superchips.
You could get a Dawes, search again.
Get a boost gauge.
Run it on optimax only.

Lol, newbies, don't you just luvvem!

First thing is to slow down and take a breath. In your haste to bolt things onto your car, you may end up making a mistake that could concievably blow it up, so take it steady, have a good read round here, and get used to your car before you start messing around with it.

You don't need an induction kit to make your car quicker, and a bad one could cause you a stack of problems. Same with exhausts, there are good ones and not so good ones, so what did you buy?

Second thing is to find out how much your insurance will cost you for any given power hike. As a 21 year old with a WRX, it'll already cost you a bit, and they may not be too keen on the idea of you modifying it until you've shown them you can drive it for a while without stuffing it in the nearest tree. All modifications are notifiable, and you risk your cover being invalidated if you change something and don't tell them, which is a big no-no.

You also need to add diagnostic/warning devices like a KnockLink and AFR meter before you mess with the boost.

The best thing to do is relax and read the forum a bit. It's a bit unfair expecting us to lay out a step by step menu of what you should do, when and for how much.

You'll probably be able to learn everything you need to know just by reading for a while, so take it steady and enjoy the car as it is in the meantime. At least that way when you do start changing things, you'll know you're doing it the right way...

I am also new to scoobs, i got a 1995 WRX, just done a few things at moment.
HKS induction kit
HKS sequential DV
Cusco front strut brace
Symms rear strut brace
changed the horrid orange indicators for clear ones

Next on list is Knocklink (also a group buy on here)

I run Optimax and booster at all times, was using Millers, now using Wynns (well after used up last 2 bottles of Millers).

I am still grinning after every journey near 3 months into ownership.

i brought mine home and 30 mins later i had changed the front indicators for sum smoked ones

imo sum things need to be rushed, like them horrible orange things they fit

i wouldnt rush the engine tuning stuff tho, far to easy to blow them up

Stu, if you try and go through all the potential questions in one go, you won't learn as much as you will if you relax a bit and take it all in a little more gradually.

The sort of questions you should be asking right now aren't "what do I have to do before I turn the boost up?", should be more along the lines of "How do I get the best out of, and take care of this car?". Much better to learn to walk proper before you try and run. You've already seen a very pertinent point made about running on the right petrol and octane booster. The learning process starts from there, and the next word you need to learn is Knocklink.

At end of day there's no need to rush into modifying your car, even bog standard it'll be more than enough to keep you happy. There'll be a lot less risk of blowing it up if you count to ten before bolting anything on, so chill a wee bit. It'll be to the car's benefit in the long run.
