if the decat as caused damage is there anyway i can tell
You could take the car out and drive it right to the rev-limit in each gear (need a safe road for 5th)
You really need a knock sensor to tell you what's happening.. oh and a boost gauge to show you it's boosting to the correct pressure.

...in northampton, V plate, 42000miles, DBM for £15,000
had a few concerns though
1. when changed to 5th it 'crunched' into it, higher the revs worse it was???
2. had been fully decatted but no ECU changes to allow for fueling, have heard STi's cant cope being run with full decat AND 97/98 ron fuel which would cause detting/knocking???
3. the red was coming of the red top!, this normal with age???
anyone help?

syncro for 5th will have to be changed, somewhere around £350 plus I should have thought

I think you will find the red comes off on all of the red top manifolds. It is only cosmetic and you can paint it yourself with some other high temp crinkle paint. You should not need any ECU changes for a full decat.
The crunching into fifth I would worry about.

You should definately need ECU changes for a full de-cat!!

My STi V is in for remap with BRD in oct, my knocklink is telling me at certain RPM det is occuring with my full decat setup, so i am backing off till its remapped.
Why would you spend hundreds of pounds on a exhaust system & not have it set up properly to take full advantage of the decat coupled with better breathing

as the other have mentioned,
red crackle does me off, not a concern.
full decat, remap not crucial but best way forward. a cheap way would be fitting fuel cut defender, uprated fuel pump/pressure rgulator and always, let me repeat, ALWAYS run on super unleaded with octane booster. lambda and knocklink very inportant as well.
crunching, that's most likely the synchro. type R's have most problems with the 4th synchro i was told. rebuilt mine (v4 type R)with the whole gearbox, a couple of hundred will be needed.
with all safety sorted, they should be a crackin car to drive.

I am not an expert but...
Lots of people that I know who have a knocklink fitted (myself included) and have a full decat, and standard ECU map, do not get detonation.
Although I am sure a remap will be better in the long run, for performance and overall running of engine.

Deffo a syncro in the gearing....gearkits are circa £400 + say £250 for fitting !
Red from manifolds should never come off UNLESS it's been power/jetwashed in which case it will continue to peel/flake off.
De-catting the zorst will indeed alter the air intake etc...but as far as I'm aware the 6 ECU will re-adjust itself for this accordingly !

I have an STI5 TypeR with a full decat. I use optimax and NF booster and have never seen the car det once on my knocklink (yes it is set to full sensitivity), even on a hot day.
As said don't worry about the paint.
As for the crunching 5th, this is a very common problem. I have spoken to many people on this forum who have had or know of this problem (inc Bob Rawle)
This is not nesseseraly the syncro as everyone keep saying.
There are many possible causes. Do a search, there is loads of information related to this problem, very few mention syncros.
I have learned to live with it on mine, you learn how to work around it and it has never gotten any worse. All the other STI's I have driven have similar probelems.

If I was in your shoes, my thoughts on this would boil down to two things: Does it have a KnockLink fitted, and did the seller mention the use of appropriate fuel grades/octane boosters when you saw it?
If there's no KnockLink, the inference is that either the seller doesn't know about the dangers of det, or does and doesn't care. Either way it's a risky buy.
Similarly, lack of conversation on the merits of the right fuel and OB denote a lack of concern for the longer term health of the engine, and are enough to put an asterisk against the car.

lol @ peccy.
Be carefull though, you've already got a sweet motor and the last thing you want is to buy someone elses problems.
You don't wanna find that the one you've bought isn't as good as the one you've sold.

Sure peccy won't mind me saying this about his car
I went with him to look at the STi6, and the difference in drive was unbelievable. This was approacing how a scooby should be. I've always said UK cars are quite sluggish... now hopefully he believes me LOL
Fair enough Peccys car looks good for a Subaru, but since when did anybody buy one purely for looks? (I hope not anyway as they are quite ugly to be fair!)
Hurry up and get a 2 door Peck
