I had just came off a round-a-bout and onto a straight road (with a 60mph limit). I decided to kick in the old turbos and therefore did.
Well, I got into third and accelerated, then suddenly it seemed like the brakes came on for no reason!! It was only for a split second, but long enough for me to cr*p myself! (not literally!!), and then carried on accelerating like normal. It never did it again after that.
Now, I dunno if this was mechanical or if my foot slightly touched the brakes (I very much doubt it...but it could be).
Has anyone ever had anything similar to this happen to them? Or any idea what it could be?

i have had this happen to me - its just like you have lost a lot o power. It does sound like a fuel problem, it cant possibly be the fuel u use could it. I have used normall petrol when i cant get optimax.

Used to have this on my RB5 after comin off a fast tight roundabout or sharp turn. I was told a swirl pot would solve the problem.

If everything appeared to go silent for a split second whilst your head went towards the windscreen as if you hit a brick wall, thats the effect of fuel surge. It happens a few seconds after a high G turn when running low on fuel.
A 'characteristic' of our beloved scoobs

Yep similar problem for me. Low fuel, flung it round a roundabout and onto a bypass accelerating hard then it cut out for a second or too. Definately a fuel surge thing but first time I,ve experienced it.

My STI7 has done this twice only.
Both just after a roundabout on a bypass (i.e. very fast) and both with less than 1/2 tank of fuel, but only just less than 1/2 tank.
It is a good job I had my seatbelt on!
I tend to be a bit nmore carefull on roundabouts with less than 1/2 tank of fuel now - never seen the problem since

Happened to me a few times.
Usually with low fuel in left hand bends. That would explain why you get it coming off a round about as the exit usually throws you into a bit of a left hander.

Mine happens at 4K everytime - I usually clean out the boost solenoid then it disappears for a good while.
It is some thump it gives you though - I got it recording a 'spirited' drive to my mums, and it threw the camera off the rear shelf.

I decided to kick in the old turbos
If the 'loss of power' occured within 1-2s of leaving the roundabout on full boost then its very likely fuel surge. Any longer than that and its likely something else like overboost. Are you sure it wasn't loss of engine power that FELT like the brakes coming on. I can't imagine the brakes would randomly come on

Cool, cheers for the responces guys and girls
Thinking about it, I think it was a fuel surge, only thing is, it was like 3/4's full. But like it was just said above, I had literally just come off the round-a-bout and accelerated when it happened.
Again, thanks for the responces peeps

Reib If tank was nearly 3/4 full then I wonder if it was fuel surge. Dont think it could be with that amount of fuel. Good bit less than half tank then maybe but not with 3/4 full.
More likely that you hit the fuel cut. Which happens when your engine over boosts (as far as I know). Think its a safety device to avoid enigine damage. Could be due to wastegate sticking abit or something like that.
I am sure someone will know more about this that me and correct me if im wrong.

Have you got a boost gauge? Might be worth getting the boost level checked, and cleaning out the solenoid. With 3/4 tank full it is much more likely to be fuel cut. Worth fixing it because it can't be particularly good for the engine.

i have had the prob with my sti, 3/4 tank and it felt like overboosting or something, the boost guage shows 1.2bar so don't think it's that. It's going in for a cambelt change and a service next week so i'll mention the problem and see what the experts think.

Had something similar happen to mine (when i had a scoob)... pulled out of a junction, went to boot it and it faultered then picked up. Did it a couple of times then one of the coil packs died. Not mega expensive, but pain in the ar$e nonetheless.

Had exact same problem in STI7 PPP once or twice. Few fast laps of motorway roundabout high-cornering speeds then WOT onto motorway and had fuel cut or maybe fuel surge (how can u tell the difference?) lasted for second or so. Definitely a fuel flow problem of some sort.
Odd thing is this does not happen all the time actually very rarely so clearly the fuel level is related, always happens between 5 and 6K revs.
Other than this engine has never missed a beat in 23K miles.
