I am hoping to buy an Impreza Turbo and have a few questions for you experts. I am new to Imprezas, so would appreciate your opinions on the following:

I have been told that it is risky to buy a grey import Impreza Turbo for some reason to do with what fuel it has been run on. Is this lower octane fuel in Japan that might have damaged the car prior to import, or UK fuel ruining a Japanese spec engine by its UK owner. This isn't clear to me, but I understand that I should run it on Optimax or 97RON.

Is there a way to test/inspect a car to tell if it has been damaged by the wrong fuel?

Are the WRX Imprezas being offered by grey importers generally good value? I am looking at the Mid-1990s £6,000 - 7,000 bracket.

What is the horsepower of an STi, compared with a WRX?

Should I avoid modified ones? There seem to be quite a few about and look quite tempting.

Are all WRX grey imports 240bhp? If not how do I tell which ones are?

What is a Impreza Classic?

Could anyone recommend a reputable grey importer that won't rip me off, or sell suspect cars!

Thanks very much to anyone who can answer.

First of all, the engine damage you mention is caused by det by running an import car which is mapped for 100 ron fuel on lower octane fuel in this country. Be sure to use at least optimax and you could add a fuel additive.

You can find more detailshere

I own a uk model, so its hard to add much more.
As far as importers are concerened, take a look at litchfield imports or bristol import centre.

Hope that helps
