6 speed box, is it a gimmick??

There seems to be a lot of chat about the WRX being faster than the STi etc. I assume most of this has to be down to the fact the STi8 is heavier and the extra gear means loss of time changing gear?
So is 6 speed a waste of time? a gimmick even? And why do Subaru produce a car that is perceived to be higher up the scale hence higher purchase cost and proceed to make it a lesser car
I know the STi8 has nicer brakes, better seats, smaller steering wheel etc. and a water spray which I have to add I have never had the inclination or the will to press other than in traffic when bored but even so if its slower where's the logic??

No - the WRX with PPP is quicker to 60, only because it makes 60 in second. Standard v Standard the STI is quicker.
there has been lots of talk on here as to why WRX + PPP, circa 21500 list is quicker tha the 25k STi, however the STi also comes with LSD, 6 speed, Brembos, plus the cosmetics. IIRC the engine is 80% different too.

The 6 speed box has the same ratio in 6th and the WRX does in 5th so all the other gears are slightly lower and closer spaced. Makes keeping the engine spinning easier and it's always nice to have a close ration box....
IMHO, the STi is a much more capable car (due to many reasons) than the WRX but requires a lot more effort, which I think makes it a more rewarding drive - but them I am biased.....

Guys just to back up what you are saying, we have an 03 WRX and an 03 STi in the household. My other half can't believe the difference, the other day we were heading home and we got to a stretch of dual carriageway, she was a couple of cars ahead and gunned it (so she already has an advantage). I pull out and overtake the cars and begin to real her in (which didn't take long). So I think the times are down to gearing myself as if you are going through the box the STi will eat the WRX.
