What is a "51 plate"
#5
its the new way of knowing what year a car is. If a car is a 51 plate then it was registered Sept 2001. 01 would be March 2002, 52 Sept 2002, 02 March 2003, and 53 will be in about a months time, and so on! I think I got the years right! Correct me if I'm wrong... bit tired!

Cars registered after March 2001 have plates like "XX 01 XXX" and those registered after Sept 2001 have plates like "XX 51 XXX" which changed to "XXX 02 XX" in March 2002.
XX = 2 letters designating where the car was registered
XXX = 3 random letters
XX = 2 letters designating where the car was registered
XXX = 3 random letters

March 01 to Sept 01 was a "Y" plate.
Anything that starts with a 5 signifies Sept to March
Anything that starts with a 0 signifies March to Sept
The second letter is the year.
So 51 is September 01 to March 02
A 04 reg will be March 04 to September 04
A 58 reg will be September 2008 to March 2009
And so on......

...And then it gets even more confusing after 2009 - 60 and 61 etc.
...or 00 and 60?
...or 10 and 60?

The reason they used "51" was because from 1963 they used a letter for every year ie A,1963 B,1964 etc etc. They never used the letter I, O, Q, U, Z, at all so the last time they changed the way they did reg nos, they had used 50 letters from 1963.
So they just started at 51, Does that make sense!!

Bit illogical innit - wouldn't 91 for September 01 and 31 for March 01 be easier? Ah well....
Current method will last for 49 years when all the numbers from 02 to 99 have been used. (01 was never used)
