Coming from the middle of nowhere, car crime is pretty non-existant (touching wood etc).Next week i'll be doing some work in Greater Manchester (all over) and doing quite a bit of driving to and fro . Question is, after reading all the "car nicked in Manc' threads, will i be better off taking my wifes car for the trip, or am i just over-exagerating the situation.

Like any big city, be sensible. Don't save a quid on the car park by putting it down some shady side road. 'Touch wood' I've always be fine... just use your brain.

I heard that a chap left a pile of bricks there once, and when he came back it was up on bricks.

Depends what areas specifically, i live in Greater Manchester, and there's places you could leave a car unlocked for days without it being touched... there are other areas which aren't quite as secure.

Park it at Old Trafford cos no one who lives in Manchester goes there so you'll be ok, except match days!

So true! Last time I was in that neck of the woods I kept tripping over Japanese tourists. Not a native in sight...!

As mentioned above, if you are in the town centre choose a secure(READ: dear) carpark with cameras and security. Elsewhere its just a case of using your noggin' and being careful about where you leave it. I'd also reccomend that if you are anywhere you don't know then keep your doors and windows locked/shut.

Manchester is no worse than any other city......

No problem
I work there, and park there every day in the city centre.
Just take the usual precautions as in previous threads, what area of Manchester, there are a few rough one's like any big city.

I was reliably informed, that the two main car parks in the centre of Manchester namely Church St & Market St Car Parks, have the highest crime rate of any other car park in Manchester

I always get a lift, or park in our office car park (outside Manc Centre) and walk in

Manchester does have a problem with crime generally, especailly thefts of/from cars, as do most big inner city areas so as people have suggested above think about where you are parking i.e. pick a car park that is barrier controlled and has cctv cameras. I work at the CIS building on Miller Street and the NCP across the road has more cameras than Jessops, so the thieving scum tend to go down the road where people park for free on quiet side roads

The car parks around Old Trafford are pretty good - I should know cos I'm there every other week

Unhappy

Jesus, made the mistake of parking my old 5 Turbo in that car park on Shudehill once. Twenty minutes later, returned to a bust door lock, steering lock, smashed dash and a ripped out alarm. They couldn't start it though and the funniest thing was, no one saw or did a damn thing about it. Me, I would have phoned the police and still would if I clocked something suspicious like that.

I used to think it was bad but every city is bad i live in Salisbury at the moment thats ment to be really nice. Last night outside my house a guy was having a aurgument with someone then smacked a windows with his hands blood everywhere. Later i watched another guy get done over with a baseball bat, but he needed it to shout his mouth..
