12,000 MILE SERVICE
#5
Penn,
Why did you have a 12k service? Scoobs need to be done ever 7.5k so I'd have thought it would've been a 15k
Anyway, what did it include and who did it?
My admitedly UK car at it's 15k service needed new brake pads all round, that cost about 380 quid IIRC, form a main dealer who was quite reasonably priced (75 quid for the interim oil change, 140 for the 15k + 180 for the pads and 60 to fit).

and everyone else
the service was 12k because it had gone over the 6 months mark. I was told every 6k or 6months by the guys that service mine.
it was the standard, oil, brake, bla bla stuff was changed, plus they charged me 80 to look at the speedo problem they maintain they can't fix.... crap.
PS: I don't compete....

The 6 month one should only be a oil and filter change and a visual inspection. I do this myself now, as I don't see why I should pay Tiley's of Bristol £178 for an oil change that takes them apparently 2 hours to complete! Another local garage to me in Carmarthen (DRJ Motors) charged me £110 for the 7.5K service, which is more realistic!
Oil costs me £25 + filter and sump gasket £10 and takes me 1/2 hour. Simple. This I now do myself every 3000 miles. The 15,30,45,60 etc K miles IMHO should be done by the experts, but the smaller ones can easily be a DIY task.
Bit of a disaster though last time....the draining bucket I used for the oil had mysteriously developed a hole! When I came back from lunch...oil all over the drive...what a nasty thing to clean up!!!

The dealers I've been to down south all had 'menu' pricing - ie fixed - and all were about the same. Was this a 24 month service? If so that sounds about right going by alternative 1m 6m 12m 18m etc schedule as opposed to by milage.

Definately sounds steep Penni,
Had mine a couple of months back and it was around £150.
Ask them to verify exactly what contributed to the bill, labour time/charges and parts etc.
My dealer also states that the service schedule is 1k, 7.5k, 15k etc etc.
Good luck.

Hi P.
Your car is an import, if I recall correctly.
Let us know where you got the service done, why it was at 12,OOO miles and what, if anything, was replaced other than oil, filters, etc.
It would then be easier to comment helpfully.
Cheers
D.
PS - 'fraid you've got some serious competition. I met Subie Gal at Knockhill last week

I have an import, serviced at a main dealer, & I pay exactly the same as when I ran my UK car - ie £80-120 for 7.5/15/22.5 & £400ish for 30k one.
Non Subaru garages should charge less I would have thought - what have you been charged for ?
If there was any work needed above the regular service items & they should have called you to get your permission to proceed.

Can someone please clarify the servicing schedule for me. I know it's every 7.5k miles but...
Is it: 1k, 7.5k, 15k...?
OR
1k, 8.5k, 16k...?
Thanks!
Andrei

Every 6 months or 7500 miles, whichever comes sooner. My 1st annual service (only 9000 miles) cost £280. The 6 month oil change cost &108. Cheap compared to a TVR or EVO, Expensive compared to my ol 1.4 Polo.

My 98 is now 18 months old, done only 11,000 miles. Services have been as follows:
1 week old - 1,000 miles - £40
6 months - 4,000 miles - £95
12 months - 7,000 miles - £105
18 months - 11,000 miles - £80 (last week)
Have been quoted £370 all in for the next one, the big 2 year effort, the usual oil change plus all diff fluids, spark plugs, filters, etc.
Definitely £370 is too high for a wee service.
Later.

When I was running my Mcrae, the 60k mile service was £560! PIAA bulbs are pricey, so is an exhaust heat shield, the £370 quote went out of the window.
The car certainly felt a LOT better afterwards, unlike my credit card.

As a reasonably high milage driver (25-30K per year) my services fall by miles. Interim services are never more than £85, standard services with change of plugs etc, around £110, and the big one at 45K when the cam belt is changed around £400.
My garge even give you a small can of WD40 and a bottle of screen wash free with the service (well, it will be in the cost somewhere, but it comes across as a nice "feature") plus they jet wash the car as well .
