The RAs are strange and most people think they are stripped out racers, well some are and some arent. Mine has climate control(with air con), a full electric pack (wing mirrors glass and folding, central locking and windows x4) except the ariel, no rear wash wiper, no side or rear skirts. Plenty of light weight bits on it as well. No bright switch and no headlamp washers.

I could go on but it will only confuse.

thanks to everyone for thier answers. Just from looking at autotrader at a 1997 P Reg Subaru Impreza 2.0 WRX 555 sti. V-LTD:

http://atsearch.autotrader.co.uk/www/CARS_popup.asp?modelexact=1&make=SUBARU&min_pr=&po stcode=DA3+7NP&source=0&model=IMPREZA&max_pr=10000 &variant=wrx&mileage=&miles=1500&photo=1&sort=5&ke ywords=555&agerange=&max_records=200&search.x=37&s earch.y=7&start=1&distance=182&adcategory=CARS&cha nnel=CARS&id=200330102016113

and for a non 'WRX' version, for similar cash, you can get a 1999 Subaru Impreza Turbo 2000 4WD 4dr [SR] Saloon with similar miles:

http://atsearch.autotrader.co.uk/www/CARS_popup.asp?modelexact=1&make=SUBARU&min_pr=&po stcode=da3+7np&source=0&model=IMPREZA&max_pr=10000 &variant=turbo&mileage=&miles=1500&photo=1&sort=5& keywords=&agerange=&max_records=200&search.x=0&sea rch.y=0&start=3&distance=74&adcategory=CARS&channe l=CARS&id=200328099913947

Which car would be quicker? and what would the power difference be?

Are you guys saying that UK / WRX jap are pretty much the same cars apart from a few extras?

Cool

Some of the bits the standard WRX (not RA) has that UK equiv doesnt
Your comparing apples n oranges m8

Besides all the tat (extras) the Japanese motors have as standard
that the UK ones don`t (BTW mine doesn`t have an electric arial)
The original WRX has shorter gearing than the turbo 2000
which makes it a lot better for sprints and is a lighter car.
The WRX sti has even better gearing than both the above,
also a better clutch, higher rev limit and one or two other bits

Of them all in std guise the turbo 2000 has the least power compared to like Japanese year models. So the answer to your
question is the UK is the slowest of them all.

The first, the 555 special edtn
is something like this spec :
275 PS (270BHP ??) WRX STi2 555 4 door Special edition
does not mention tracker or alarm.
Has aircon, water spray, tints ? standard alloys I think.
Not too many of these around.

Second like this
215 bhp UK Turbo2000, tracker, alarm.Looks like the owner has taken any mods that were fitted off.
Except for clear indicators & repeaters, (nice wheels)

thanks again guys

Basically I have just been made redundant and I have £10K to blow. I have always wanted a scooby, and I only intend on having it for a year max - then move onto something else.

Handling is imporant, low depreciation and speed. Out of a uk spec vs a 555 for example what would you recommend?

Would there be alot of difference in handling between a 555 and a uk spec 2000 turbo?

The turbo 2000 was 208 - 225 bhp depending on the year the classic WRX was 240 - 276 bhp depending on year also the early turbo 2000 had crap seats witch look like they came out of a metro the WRX had a much better spec including bigger turbo, bigger intercooler, propper seats, rear wiper, air con as standerd, climate control, stiffer body, better suspention ect ect

For speed, the WRX or WRX STi will win, no question. Generally some uprated parts, lighter weight in some versions, often stiffer suspension, so yes it will generally handle better. However, pre 2001 WRX or WRX STis will be imports (proabably from Japan). Therefore, can be much more expensive to insure, higher running costs etc.

In simple terms, if you know you can get insurance and afford to run it, the WRX or WRX STi is the best way to the "full on scooby experience" for a year. The turbo will still be fast and fun, and cost you less to use.

The imports quoted power is often as per running on 100RON Jap fuel I think, so a 280 Bhp import may only be running 260 here, even on Optimax - something to bear in mind.

If you're worried about depreciation then it has to be a good FSSH 98/99 UK Classic for your money.
