Type RA - Whats It Really Like?!
#1
ok, im still lookin for a scooby.
ive now found a nice one, but its the wrx type ra!
ive looked into this model, and yes its bloody quick, but it doesnt have the refinements of the standard wrx.
i can live without air con, and electric windows. and i know it also loses its central locking,
BUT the most worring factor is that it loses all of it 'sound proofing'.
so my quwstion to 'TYPE RA' owners is, what is it like without sound proofing. alot more rattles and engine sound i take it?!
is the type ra worth going for?
any other helpful info would be greatfully received.

I have a Type R and it's a hoot to drive, RA is supposed to be even better(less weight etc) - depends what you want it for..
Not for motorway crusing all day.. it's a hardcore B road terrorist..

I have a 1995 WRX RA and don't think it's very load inside the car at all, not unbearable anyway. If I was to buy another scooby it would be an RA, no doubt about it. I don't buy a car for heated this and that etc.. I buy it for FUN WOOOOOHOOOO!!!! and an RA has plenty.

Yep 1993 is one of the first mine is a my00 but there are similarities.
You know the plus sides but they are downsides :
1) Gearing - Not great motorway cruisers, the gearing is very low esp. on the early cars. I try an avoid motorway journeys as much as possible. This is what gives it is midrange pull though.
2) Sound proofing - with a standard exhaust mine wasnt that loud IMHO. Now with a straight thru centre and scoobsport backbox is loud on throttle but not too bad whilst crusing at the same speed.
3) Toys - early cars had no electrics and keep fit windows. I was lucky mine is a limited version so it has all the kit a WRX has plus a few extras.
4) Spoilers/wheels/brakes - some of the early RA has basic wheels,no spoilers and small brakes as it was expected you were going to throw them away and add your own.
I like my RA but its not an everyday car. I dont tend to do long journeys in it but its quite capable of doing them.
I would take a long test drive and see if you can live with it. Compare it by driving a normal UK turbo and a WRX is my best advice.
The only other issue is fuel which has been covered a lot on the BBS, see drivetrain forum.
Insurance may also be tricky I had trouble getting a quote on an RA. Check out the insurance forum for the best deals at the moment.
(this is chrisp on SIDC forum as well )

The RA gearbox is essentially 1st, 1st and a half, 2nd, 3rd, 4th when compared to a normal WRX. This means on the motor way you will be doing circa 4,500rpm at 60mph instead of just below 2,000rpm or what ever it is. You will be using more fuel as you will never effectively get out of 4th gear. It's legs aren't as long basically.
I loved mine but they do get to you after a while. Trim parts are harder to get too. And several panels being a lighter alloy means insurance can charge more if they realise.
Bloody quick though.

Fuel wise I run on Shell optimax and octane booster. If you do a search for optimax and octane booster you will get loads of threads discussing it. I dont know about MY93 engines and what they need so it maybe worth a new thread in drivetrain and ask poeple who have an MY93 WRX RA what they run. You can avoid using octane booster by having the ECU remapped you may want to include this in your question about MY93 WRX RAs.
