Alright folks,

I'm looking to get myslef an Impreza in the very near future and i'm looking for some advice. I currently drive a Civic Type-r which i've had since new and i'm looking for something a bit quicker.

Anyway, i'm looking to spend about 18-20k for a car and was wondering what recommendations you might have. I haven't test driven anything yet as i'm not sure which car i'm after. Ideally i wan't the fastest thing i can get my hands on that's not been non-dealer modded.
My TT driving boss has been on about me getting a P1 (apparently his mate down south has one and there pretty good) , which i have seen one of for sale near me in my price range.

Is there a guide to the different models/specs available that i can get my hands on??

Cheers

Chris

Have a look in the for sale forum, there is a nice 02 STi with only 5000 miles (guy called BASHER, I believe) he wants about £19000 for it, bargain. I would stick to a UK car as new as possible if I had that money to spend. While a P1 is undoubtedly a superb car most will be out of warranty now and are starting to pile the miles on. A late STi with PPP gives you about 300HP and you may even find this in your budget if you buy privately. Personally speaking I would avoid Jap Market Imports as the hassle of running octane boosters, etc puts me off. it really all depends what you want from a car, mines a family car that the wife has to drive and use so I run a pretty standard 00my wagon. If I were after a sunday/track day car I probably may buy an STi jap market car which obviously gives more power but with added risk.

Cheers mate, i'm having some significant insurance quote issues right now though. I'm 25, got 4 years NCD, IT job, and am a nice sensible married chap whos been driving since 1995 without an incident.
Any advice on this??

gota be the last of the classic STi type R's there is no real arguements that they are the fastest scooby certainly as standard (0-60 in 4.3sex or so ) can get a minter for a few k less than yer budget & well spend it on sum nice toys init

insurance if yer standard then privilege/direct line maybe best bet espcecially if a UK car, liverpool victoria will be good if non standard but wont touch under 30'3s on the imports also tesco etc generally give good prices thats; the main offenders who gave me decent quotes in different states of age & mods....

if you don't mind me being nosy Si, what kind of cash are you paying annually for insurance and what car do you have??

I really want to get an impreza but unless i can get an insureance quote near 1K there's no way i can justify getting rid of the Civic Type-R which is a fast wee motor anyway and reltively cheap to insure. PLus the missus is less than impressed with the idea of teh impreza as she thinks they look like "Ned cars"

I might try tesco again, they were by far the lowest for the p1 at around 2k. My current insurer adrian flux wanted 3k. Apparently they had a recent 'incident' involving a young driver drving on 3rd party who paralysed someone and created a million pound compensation case.
I also phoned Liv Vic but they wouldn;t quote me as i'm under 30, that was for a P1 mind you so i may try again for the STi.

well in my first year i was 24 with 2 years no claims no convictions etc garaged all security devices on a standard UK MY97 turbo 2000 was around £1400 with privilege/direct line but they were less friendly when the mods started trickling on this year with liv vic covered for every mod under the sun & an extra years no claims + being 25 when policy taken out was just over 1k.
It's horses for courses really but if yer able to spend 20k on a car i wouldn't let a few hundred quid insurance put you off i mean that's only a couple of days petrol money lol

looking at that car, the insurance is still going to be horrific. Yeah i know it's cheaper, but i couldn;t face handing the insurance company 2k for insurance. i'll pay up 12/1300 (so long as the wife doesn't find out)

Is there a compromise car that's maybe not quite as fast as 0-60 in 4.3 seconds, but still respectibly quick.

Cool

i guess if you are going to have to stay UK then either a P1 which is IMO over priced or a UK car with PPP do you mind the look of the bug eye or even blob eye new uns? it's all about what floats yer boat really i guess & what you feel happiest spending the pennies on [read what you can get away with the misses lol]
My only other real advice would be to go along to a local meet, where about are you? & check out the variety of scoobies & their pros/cons in your eyes etc? & i'm sure the friendly locals will show you what it's all about

Si, I tried LV for a quote and they were extortionate.

I'm 27 UK MY00 with 8 years NCD. My car is modded but the quote was nearly 2 grand before I mentioned mods.

I can only assume its my postcode (Glasgow)???

Whats your post code if you don't mind me asking?

where in glasgow are you mate??? G11's not too bad for insurance.

How are you guys getting quotes from LV?? I tried them this morning and they wouldn't quote me 'cos i'm not over 30.

As for Si's point, your probably right mate, i should just go find one in budget that i like and go for that. I was quite keen on an STi as i understand they're the 'top dog' of the UK cars, but if i can't get that insurance quote down a wee bit then it looks like a plain WRX with PPP.

BTW, is the PPP classed as a mod, or a dealer option as far as the insurance bods are concerned??
