Anyone know where I can get a smaller front Number Plate made up.
I know they're .... ahem ... not legal, but I need more air flow to my rad officer.

Cool

I went for a stick-on plate from a chap who posts on here as 'Melomax'. Stuck it to my lip spoiler, thus allowing more air to radiator, and it looks pretty good IMHO. Got to be worth at least another 0.5 BHP......

The good news is it uses legal font, legal spacing and the background is reflective, and it can also be seen from the required distance (75feet ?) so I'm hoping not to to have any trouble with plod.

Although it clearly states that stick on number plates are illegal.

A matter of time me thinks.

Mine is a much smaller plate cos of a Front Mount - the letters are only just illegal but there is very little edging around the letters

I get so much grief from the Police because of it - but they never have a tape measure on them - and most of them get the dimensions wrong anyway - i.e. musty be 79mm high (+/-1mm) must have 11mm spacing inbetween letters (+/- 1 mm), etc............ and I think you need something like a 12mm border around the letters!

Most outfits these days won't do these anymore, the police can now trace the plates back to the shop you bought it from, they now suffer a fine aswell.
Your best bet is to get one done at a trackday or national event, just got another for mine on saturday at castlecoombe.

Question

Can anyone tell me if this is legal please. Because I've only got 5 chars in my number plate ## ### if I use legal characters (size and font) am I allowed to cut of the excess white space to the left and right of the chars?

Halfords will cut a plate to the exact size you require in motorbike sized lettering. That way you get it without the delay of online orders.

Hope this helps.

There was an snippet article in "CCC" a couple of months back, about changing legislation which meant Jap imports could legally run motorbike size lettering/plates.

Has anyone looked into this?

cheers,
Dela

Dela,

It's only allowed on certain imports that do not have the required space for a full size number plate. Unfortunately, Scoobies do not come into this bracket..... Legally.

I suppose you could always plead ignorance if stopped.

There is more info on the DVLA website if you are interested.

is there anything to stop you putting a "square" plate on like the evo's have? would make some difference to airflow to radiator too i would imagine.

AFAIK there aren't any restrictions on plate shape with regards to square or rectangle but I could be wrong.

Dont think a sqaure plate would be a problem, unless it was a lot smaller than normal.

Think of the amount of 4x4's have square plates on the back.
Must be a standard size.

Gosh, this one goes on and on and on!!

Just look at the DVLC site and it will tell you what's legal and what's not.

Whether or not you take the risk is up to you but my guess it's only a matter of time before you are stopped.

The longer you hold out the less sympathetic the cops might be due to the fact it's obviously common knowledge now and instead of a warning, they may just fine you.

Impreza's have room for a full size plate and if you need the full plate to display your number with the correct spacing, font and borders then you must do it.

Mickle- If you can fit you reg using the legal criteria then you should be safe. Also I thought your plate was 6 digits long anyway?

Nope, I am 5 chars with lots of white space to the left and right. I'm not one for going illegal so I'll only chop it up a bit

Flat4- Nobody would make them for you so without the BS AU 145d authenticity it's a no go.

Look good though.
