How long do scoobys last?
#1
All of a sudden ive gone all paranoid that my car is gettin on towards high mileage now the odometer has rolled over 40K miles. Its an MY99 UK Turbo with FSSH carefully treated and doesnt have any problems that I am aware of. Someone reassure me that there is loads of life in the old dog yet!

You're worried at 40k miles??? Scoobs, if looked after, are good for 150-200k miles with nothing major! Maybe the odd clutch or two, if you're a hard driver .
It's barely run in really!

Don't worry.
My MY99 UK Turbo Wagon has 34.7K on the clock. Both our cars should of covered about 48K miles by now, saying 12K miles a year average.
So far in 22 months of ownership ....
dead battery
new tyres
new back box (old one was fine, but standard)
new front disc/pads (next weekend)
new MAF (warranty)
new Lamda (warranty)
... all in all not bad for a 4 year motor, and to be honest the MAF/Lamda has been changed in the last month.
High mileage for an MY99 has got to be up in the 70K region, but IMHO the boxer engine at this mileage will still be singing sweetly .... where other engines won't.
Main reason I bought the Scoob was for the engine. I know things do go wrong (and probably will now I've said this) but would you rather have a 'mass production car that sounds like Electra' at 40K or an Impreza?

Yeah was probably me
Mine is a UK MY95 with STI 5 rear spoiler and STI 4 front lip
Just in the process of facelifting the front-end to look like an MY00

My MY98 turbo saloon is on 119,000 miles, I have known the car from new nad it had a minor warranty repair (relay?) in the first month, new battery and rear exhaust section last year but apart from that sweet as a nut. If it has a FSSH and is driven with respect (ie not driven hard until warm) high miles should not be a problem.

There are a fair few in the states running 300,000 miles yes 300,000 and there only 6/7 years old how people can drive 50,000 miles a year is beyond me, but good to know they will last!

As long as it's serviced at the correct intervals - not much of a chore with Subaru being fairly resonable on servicing costs - and oil is changed at least every 5 k, and other fluids at recommended intervals, I reckon you will see 200k no problem, without anything major engine-wise. Warm-up and warm down are imprtant too.
I looked at a few before I found mine (MY98 with FSSH, oil every 3k, 90k mostly motorway, and 90k service just done) and it drove sweeter and tighter than a 16 yr old virgin (And also sweeter and tighter than all the other scoobs i'd test driven, including ones with less than half the mileage, and a P1 demonstrator with 5k !!)
So don't you worry, ensure you learn how to change the oil, and do it every 3k, and you will be fine for years to come.
