Can I sell a car that's not registered in my name?
#1
We are in the middle of selling my wife's car (everything's in her name) but I'm not sure whether I can sell it to a dealer without her signing paperwork etc.
Her new car has arrived early and I'm trying to keep it as a surprise, which is why I want to sell her current car. She's away with work at the moment so she won't miss her current car.

Im sure the new logbooks require both the buyer and the registered keepers signature on it.
But if the dealers happy, who's to say its not her signature on the slip........ (assuming you put her name on it)

Yeah, I agree, it's very unlikely to be a problem, but it did cross my mind when I bought my car that the wife could be getting back at the husband for something and he didn't really want to sell the car, which could have got messy. Obviously not the same situation here, and it'd almost certainly be fine, but strictly speaking, no, he cannot legally sell a car not registered in his name.

Had the reverse of this problem buying my Scooby, the guy who owned it was off-shore for a month and his wife was taking care of the sale.
