I'm going to look at a black Type R Sti V4 98S tomorow.
What should I look out for? I have never owned a scooby before.
It's fully loaded and only done 23,000 miles. It's up for £14,995
but think I'll get it for 14K, is this a good price?
Any tips on what to look for on inspection and test drive would be greatly appreciated!

 

I got a blue STi 5 Type R T plater for £13K 2 months ago, but prices on these beasties seem to vary wildly!

 

make sure they havnt been playin with the diff lock controll thing.

 

How do you mean make sure they haven't been playing with it? It is there to be used, and as the manual which was posted on here stated, no damage will be caused by using the diff lock (although at slow speeds it is not advised)
When it is wet, extra progress can be made by using the diff lock (as it makes the car not so tail-happy)

 

so easy peaps lets not scare the nice person looking at a top notch scooby basic FAQ/info here & the type R is indeed the extreme end of the scooby scale with sum great toys like the adjustable diff which is described in detail on Johns thread
In terms of what to check for then if possible take sum1 who knows scoobies with ya but failing that all the usual things & possible bargaining points like brakes & clutch on last legs (if revs increase but speed doesnt ie slippy clutch that bad also bite point very near top of travel may show not much life left in clutch ) Tiz all good thou & as mentioned prices do fluctuate a bit on the R's but that doesn't sound in any way a OTT price

also service history wise your looking for it being serviced every 6 months or 7500 miles max & while history maybe limited by length in country possible. Chances are with the low milage of this car your approaching the 90k service in theory which is the biggest one possible & yer looking at circa £700 notes (depending on where you go & wot needs doing) so check when cambelt etc last done I'm guessing 90k service approaching maybe additiona reason for it being sold now

Check for notchy gear changes at higher revs which seem to be a common problem amongst Type R's. Usually the synchros that need replacing which is obviously gear box out job. Make sure all the history looks right as it is low milage for year of car.

 

For a price guide I was talking to David Hendry this morning and he ofered me a trade in value of £15.000.00 for my Type R on an X plate with 30,000miles.

Does any body else know about the little thing you have to do to start a Version 6, I thought mine was a V6 and I was sold the car through a Subaru dealer in Cyprus as a V6 I'm sure i have it on all my paper work as a Version 6, do I have any come back on dealer, being sold somthing I thought was latest version and turns out it is'nt. Just wondering, I think it might be too late to do anything as I bought it 2years + ago.

 

Theres a company out there I forget their name, who can also provide you with a check on the engine number from Japan to make sure that the car was never reported stolen over there before it was imported, if it comes up trumps the money for the check will be well worth while as if the old bill check and it did turn out to be a ringer you'd get sweet FA back and they'd take the car. My blitzen costy about £140 to have it checked out for any dubious stuff in Japan before I bought it.

version 6 is quite easy to tell over a version 5, version 6 has a diferent rear wing with a slight turnup to the top element, it also has a blue surround to the centre console and blue surround on the clocks.

Why would the car be due for a 90K service if it's only done 23K?
It also has history from Japan which makes me less doubting of the low mileage.
The car is comming from a dealer, I don't know if that makes me more confident or more worried!

Check for piston slap, mine has it at 28,000 miles sounds like TDI from cold, touch the engine to feel any heat at all as it goes away really quick when in the early stages

Then the usual abuse signs, mine seems to suffer really badly from stone chips, it even got chipped all alone the doors after a track day, the stones seems to swirl down the scallping in the doors.

usual electrics, window motors seem naff, and seat wear on the drivers bolster is poor already

also if you get a huge big grin that won't go away is usually a good sign

have fun and use your head even though you may already have bought it in your heart!!

I think the point that Scooby Si is trying to make is this...

Subaru servicing intervals, are based on mileage and/or 6 month intervals.

What this means is even if you arent doing many miles, your car will still require a service every 6 months.

Theoretically, a car could have 20k on the clock, but be 6 years old, and hence would require its 90k service.

Crazy, but common!

 

Take the engine out strip it and ensure it has STI internals and not UK!

have fun with it, they are the best scooby (22B is ok ish)

i too have just bought a Type R, although mine is a 98 S its a version 5. Cost me over £14k but not a lot. Is it from Car Imports direct in bristol?

i am ever so happy with mine ands the looks i get on the street count volumes towards the grin factor these things give you.

check it has been sva'd and find out if they are changing the fuel mapping as that might make a difference.
