Question

Is it possible to fit a bike rack to a P1 - either a boot mounted thing (unlikely I suspect) or a roof one?

I need to transport my mtb around and I'm getting fed up with taking it to bits and cramming it all in the boot....

Simon,

I'm sure the Subaru roofs bar will fit your P1. They're relatively cheap and much better fitment than the Thule ones. Once you've got roof bars, you can buy any MTB mount (Thule, Halfords, etc..)

Other option is one for the boot; the Paddy Hopkirk ones fit. I have one of these that I no longer use since I bought the Subaru roof bars. If you're interested let me know; I think it'll only cost me around £40.

Unless I'm very much mistaken, the Subaru OE roof bars will fit your car. I bought some for a '98 UK car off here, and they are really rigid, if a little difficult to fit first time out!
The racks I use are the Thule front-wheel-out-type, that one has my lad's trials Orange Zero on it, as the upright type, of which I have 3 more, bought for £5 each in France, can't grip his downtube, which is a 5-sided shape.
Boot mounted racks cause the worst fuel consumption, followed by towbar mounted ones followed by roof mounted ones. That last bit came from "Which" magazine BTW.

excuse me for jumping in , but are the subaru roof bars easy to fit/remove? The reason I ask is that I went to buy some a while ago and they told me not to bother as they are such a fiddle to get on and off.

Yes, they are a bit cumbersome to fit since you have to slide them into some channels under the rubber strip on the roof.

Thule ones are quicker to fit, but I liked the idea of the OEM fitting more securely (well more secure in my view).

Check your dealer to see if the OEM bars will fit your P1 with it's shorter roof. If it's got the rubber strip with the channels, then I don't see why the won't.
