Re-inventing the wheel

Hi Guys. Just bought my first scooby, an unmodified MY99 and very happy with the purchase. Bottom line is I didn't realise what I was missing until I got behind the wheel and sampled it for myself. Now, this has got me thinking about modifications and how much better it can get!
I don't want to re-invent the wheel so if any of you have the time to advise me on what to look at first, it would be appreciated. Are there a few easy mods to start with that bring about the greatest benefits without too much cost? I guess what I'm saying is I want to extract the best before planning major projects, but any views would be helpful.

Any particular make of back box? What about the exit pipe diameter? Is the biggest necessarily the best?
Also, I've read a bit about connecting scart type leads found under the steering colomn and driving around for a while to do something to the ECU but have lost the info and didn't really understand it anyway.
Another thing someone told me was you can get better breathing by removing a restriction in the air intake side caused by something to prevent water getting into the engine. It was one on those conversations down the pub and the guy was not that well clued up. Does anyone know what he was talking about and is it a good idea anyway?

Definately agree with that. As you probably know its got 4 pots straight out of the factory so do you mean better pads, perhaps braided hoses etc. or won't that make enough difference.
I'm sure a 6 or 10 pot set up with massive rotors would be the perfect solution but I'm looking for small tweeks that can be worthwhile without costing a fortune.
Who has been in my boat and made some useful changes, (or expensive mistakes that they might help me to avoid)?

To be honest most aftermarket backbox's will give a healthy throb.
I personally went for a Magnex 3.5" at £215.
If i was to start over, i would go for the Scoobyworld Ninja box, again at £215.

To schtop the beast: Mesh hoses, good fluid, DS2500 pads (or similar) for starters. There are lots of other/further upgrades available, but the investment can be fairly eye watering IMHO. Make sure your tyres are up to the job too
Before going for power upgrades, a boost gauge and Knocklink are a good investemnt to protect your engine (and your wallet). You really need to protect yourself from det and overboost IMHO.
Just my 2p worth...

This is how I upgraded my MY00 (the car was bought with 17" alloys and Toyo's)
1)Full H&S exhaust
2)ITG panel filter
3)Upgraded Samco intercooler hosing
2 month gap
4)New brake discs & pads
5)Bumpsteer removal
6)Anti-lift kit
7)Rear anti-sway bar
8)Rear Drop links
9)Geometry re-done
1 month gap
10)Clear indicators & silver bulbs
That is how they should come direct from the factory

How about that ECU/scart lead stuff I mentioned above and the restrictions on the inlet side cause by something designed to stop water getting into the engine? Does this make any sense to anyone or have I been talking to the wrong people down the pub?
