I have received notification that this is now due (annually)
Cost £99.99

Is this necessary or just a money spinner?

What does the aircon service actually consist of? A re-gassing? This is only needed if it doesn't work. Sounds like a con. You can "service" the aircon yourself by using it every now and again throughout the year.
