Does anyone know who thought of defining model and year as "MY"? I've not found that term used on official websites, and my local dealership say they never refer to their stock as MY. In fact, this is the only place I've seen it used.

Chris

The dealer salesmen appear to use "01 plate, 51 plate" etc. It just seemed odd that I only see it here, as though this is where it drifted into use, but even more strange that if MY means model-year, then MY 03 WRX translates as a model 03 from the year WRX.

If someone said MY03 WRX to me I would take that to mean a 2003 WRX model not an 03 reg. A 53 model could be an MY03 or an MY04 and this is the problem if you dont use MY and why its a good idea to use MY and also give the reg as well.

How can it be manufacturing year as, for example, you could buy an MY99 in october 1998 .

But they're in reverse. Why not YM if it's to mean what you say? I don't remember the year WRX.

Dave, are you on something?

Where the heck is WRX relative?

MY is model year and not Subaru designated only.

It applies to any make of car

Let me see if I can make it simpler. MY means model and year - right? So why, in that order is it (eg) 03 WRX, surely it should be YM if that's the case. That way it would be correctly the year followed by the model. Your failure to grasp this fundamental point suggests you must be on something.

Hardly heated Brun.

I've simply explained what MY is.

Dave-Using your daft example let me try and explain again.

Dates here will be wrong but hopefully you will grab the fundamental objective.

You could possibly have a 2002 wrx (supposedly bugeye)but MY2001.
Therefore although registered for sale in 2002 and bought by whoever (usually well discounted) it is the "classis shape".

An 03WRX will only be MY03 as it's a new car. So if you asked a dealer what MY a 03WRX was, you'd look a complete prát.

Maybe next year you will see a 04WRX but MY03 simply because in 04 they made slight changes and a particular car that never sold in 03 was registered in 04 hence the title 04WRX MY03.

As I said, Bugeye dates will be wrong but I can't be arsed to look it up, it was just an example to do with Scooby seeing as you keep mentioning WRX.

That's the last you'll hear from me on the subject.

Wink

Isnt this simply Model year which =MY02 or whatever, we all just put STI, WRX, S202 down cos we are just letting people know what model of car we have.

If you went round saying I've got a MY02 no one would know what model car you have.

I have a MY02 WRX its a 2002 car and its a model WRX, WTF could be simpler? If a dealer doesnt understand that then they must be retarded and too stupid to sell cars and you should find yourself another dealer.

All IMO of cource
Daz.

Happy 200th Daz, yep I totally agree. It's a simple system that works, although it was confusing when I saw a newspaper advert for the new Impreza III at the weekend.

Officially the MY03 WRX & STi are the Impreza III, i.e classics were Impreza I, Bugeyes are Impreza II.

Question

So a new STi is a

MY03 Impreza III WRX STi 8?

(And please don't start the argument that it's a 9... )

Widely used in the motor industry esp. now there are two regs a year. Very useful as you buy a car in say Nov 98, is it an MY98 phase one engine car or an MY99 phase 2 engined car. They may not use the MY terms but I bet they will tell you its a 1999 Spec car. Same difference .

Model year refers to a car with the body spec etc of that year, it may well be registered later but have the previous model's spec, i.e pre-facelift.

I seen plenty of pre-facelift brand new cars of the older design.

They then sell brand new for a good discount.

MY is widely used.

Dave, MY isn't "model and year" it is simply an abbreviation for "model year" so you can say "I have a Model Year 03 WRX" or "I have a model year '64 Ford Mustang". It doesn't mean that whatever you write after MY will me in the format "model/year".

EDITED TO SAY: I beleive most manufacturers run their model years from October - September, so a MY00 could have been built between October '99 - Spetember '00.
