Question

my STi8 is one month old and just in the last couple of days i've noticed that the cabin stinks of petrol fumes each time i climb in. i'm not sure but it seems to happen after the car has been idle for a few hours. i've not experienced this in any of my previous cars and so this is particularly noticeable.

has anyone had or is having this same experience?

Had mine for 24 hours and can't say that I've noticed a smell of petrol.
I have noticed a very hot/burning smell on occasions after turning it round outside the house?!!!

Any ideas anyone?

I think there was something over on the US i-club site about this being a problem with their WRX models. Can't remember the lowdown now but might be worth a look. Mine currently doesn't do it but...

As for the burning smell when parking it up, well, I suspect this is because it is new and there is all sorts of nasty things burning off the exhaust etc. Probably the wax that gets put on in the factory plus release agents and new brakes and that sort of thing.

Evo, don't worry about the burning smell, it goes away eventually mine was the same for the first week or so but a couple of long runs sorts it right out , it's just the horrible wax stuff that gets sprayed all over the engine bay from the factory burning off.

and when you think the new 'burning' smell has gone... you take it for an even madder blast, and lo - more burning smells again

Richie.

Had mine for 48 hrs and I too am getting that burning smell. It is mainly when I am doing a 3 point turn. It seems to be from the clutch. Ideas anyone?

When the clutch is new it smells when you reverse. Make sure you ride the clutch as little as possible as it doesn't take much to get it smelling.

It is probably the wax on the engine that is buring off that is smelling, I wiped mine off and no problems.

Slacker,

Its definitely the engine wax burning off. The intensity of this will reduce over time. I suggest you drive with the windows slightly open for a bit until the smell disappears.

All part of the ownership experience, as they say.

Wax smell - part of ownership, goes away
Petrol Smell - get it checked
Clutch smell in reverse - "they all do that, sir"

Thanks Phil, I was going to get it checked out asap to be sure anyway. If any problems, I'll report back (I think I can tell the difference in smell between wax and petrol)...strange

You might want to check out the following threads concerning the smell of petrol, looks like you are not the only one having it. i-club is US based and so their cars are slightly different from ours but even so, might be worth more searching on the site.

My STi7 was fine until I got the PPP (with fuel pump) fitted.

Now stinks - especially when just filled up.

Anyone else?

Phew! It's great to hear that I am not the only one who's car stinks when 3 point turning/reversing. I have to admit that when I first smelt it I was a bit concerned!
I did put the smell down to the clutch so I am now trying to ride it as little as possible but with the small space I have to turn round in that is easier said than done.

ago2, let me know how you get on, it'll ne interesting what they find!

i just realised the petrol smell came after i changed from using shell superunleaded to shell super expensive crap, so that must be it then?

i think i'll try another two tanks to see what mpg i get compared to the 24mpg i got using superunleaded. then i'll decide whatto use in the long run.

To get this 24mpg+ , please follow the below mentioned points:

1) air-con off
2) do not exceed 3,500rpm in any gear
3) ignore the "car like that and drives like a *****" remarks from other drivers

Guys,i had my car delivered with the PPP & it started smelling very heavily of petrol almost from day one.I took it back to the dealers who confirmed that the fuel filter?(i think) had been damaged during the PPP installation. They replaced it & ive had no problems at all since!

i think i'll settle for Siburt's answer for now so will get it checked!!!

as for them knowing nothing about it, can't really buy that. it's probably a troublesome little job that if left alone won't cause any major upsets and so gave the usual motor mechanical BS.

so what have they proposed? check the out problem after your cabin explodes from the excess vapour?

Unhappy

Yup, ever since the new ppp fuel pump was fitted, it stinks of fuel, particually when I fill up. Make my wife feel sick

I took it back to be checked, but they couldn't find any problems.
