hi everyone, im new to this forum and i would like to say "hi" to fellow scoob owner.i have just put down a deposit on a white MY98 r reg typer-r v4, can any tell me what to look out for when buying one of these and any common fault etc etc. there is a few question i would like to ask your advice:

i have notice that there isnt a sti carbon struct bar and the intercooler water spary on this car, dont they come as standard?

i have also notice the diff is set on the lowest setting (now i know the setting should not mess around with, but is this the right setting or where about should i set it to.)

thank you for any advice

Hi Monk.Thats strange about the IC spray.I had a Type R Ver4 and it defo had the IC spray(and strut brace).Look into it a bit more,it maybe a Ver3?
The Type R is a great car,I wish I never sold it sometimes. It is however as gossy says a little rear endy, you need to gradually find its limits on a favourite(quiet!) roundabout. The best mod you can do for this car is get some really good wet weather tyres.Half way through having the car I changed to Goodyear F1s and the handling was transformed.
You can play with the diff control, but for most driving you just need the last one or two clicks(ie backwards).I think the others are really for gravel rally stages!(imho)
My 98 Type R developed piston slap,(all 98 MYs were renowned for this).Insist on listening to the engine from cold,if its present you'll hear a slapping/thudding noise.
Do look into the IC issue though(maybe someone else will chip in).If you buy the car do run it on Optimax and put in some decent engine oil.Good luck.

Cool

I've got an STI3 Type R,and it has water spray and carbonfibre strut brace, make sure you run superplus or optimax with a shot of octain booster(i use NF and very happy with it).I never use the diff lock, don't really find a need for it.

Exclamation

I would like some more lite shed on the diff lock question as im about to get a type R. Some bloke at my local import garage (sh1te) told me that if you have it to high up the dash display, it winds up the drive train/gearbox and can break it if you use it on tarmac, or is he talking out of his bum????????

Would suggest as above. The water spray should be there and so should the strut brace. Don't buy it. Look elsewhere ie

www.wrx.co.uk as they have a few right now.

i.c. and strutbrace come as standard on type-r. I would reconsider purchasing the car, and finding out more about it. Or keep on looking - a few good type-r for sale on here.

regarding the adjustable diff, it has been around for some time that adjusting it was a wrong thing to do - search back in the archieves... but recently, things have changed. Look at this excellent thread by johnfelstead (http://www.scoobynet.co.uk/bbs/threa...hreadID=143750).

thanks for the reply, regarding the ic spray, i just came off the phone with someone at gradeA subaru and he said that the ic spray was an option when bought new, can someone clarify on this, i presume that this chap is right now, can i install ic spray on the car? what advantage will it give me? and anyone one know what sort of money im looking at (ie a secondhand unit and installation). still try to find out why struct is missing.

anyone know where can i get a driver manual from(the car didnt come with one) possibly the folder and servie book. thankyou

Thumbs up

Not an optional extra, but a standard fitment.

Don't buy it, look elsewhere.

Japanese imported cars are higher spec than the UK equivalent. Next you will be telling us the folding mirrors have been removed, or the DCCD, or the aircon?

You are being had on this one by the vendor. Why buy a strut brace or intercooler water spray when they ALREADY SHOULD BE FITTED TO THIS CAR AS STANDARD. Why are they missing and why are you still considering this car?

I personally would think twice about purchasing from a trader, history (user history) is paramount on these cars. Speaking to the original owner is essential.

How much is it btw?

The strut barce I can understand, as someone might have removed and sold it. It will cost upto £200 to find a replacemnet second hand.

The IC spray is a differennt matter. When you open the bonnet and look and the drivers isde front of the engine bay - behind the lights, you will see a bootle with a blue lid. This is the aterspray resevroir.

If the bottle is not there, but a load of brake pipes are, then the car has got ABS, which is what was taken out to fit the bottle on the R's and RA's.

You engine bay should also look like this:

(Thats Rhybecks car BTW, mine's a Silver one, but I dont have an engine bay picture to hand)

Might be a non-STI WRX Type R with no water spray and ABS fitted. Not sure about the strut brace..

These rare cars don't have the STI stuff like red inlet manifold, STI seats, dash, adjustable diff etc...

My non-STI WRX RA has ABS and no WI and no strut brace. If I was a betting man I would say it was a non-STi Type R. Has it got the red manifold cover and all the STI badges and the STI intercooler ? Whats the redline on the rev counter ?
