#1
finally hit the magic 21 and can afford to insurance a subura impreza. ive seen a lot of wrx cars with good milage 50k around 5-6k. is this a good price and are the early imprezas worth getting? they are pre 97 face lift but does that make a huge amount of difference with the early imprezas? the plan is once i get one ger rid of the crappy rear spoiler and put a p1 style one on and get the front looking a bit more agreesive? i only have a budget of 6.5k on buying the car, can i pick up a decent wrx for that sort of price? oh one final thing whats the bhp of the early wrx and 0-60

You can pick up some early scoobs for around £4000 - £5000 which seems like a good price.
I bought a MY95 wrx (imported it myself) and have converted the rear spoiler and front bumper etc to look a bit better. I think it makes the car look much better! Its not hard to do, once you get your car you can just get a face lift bumper from a breakers and put it on yours.
Budget of £6.5k isnt a problem! You can get a nice scoob for £5000 and then the rest is on insurance! lol. DOnt forget you will need a tracker and try Tesco for insurance.
92/93 you are looking at 240bhp
94/95 you are looking at 260 (cant remember if the 94 is 240 or 260bhp)
Anything higher your looking at 280 or 300.
All the above is based on imports and doesnt include the standard uk turbos (excluding 22bs and p1s).
Good luck and have fun. Dont forget not to spend all your money though as cambelt, clutch, petrol etc can be expensive! lol

The first wrx's are 240bhp, the fourth leter on the vin plate will tell you this. If its A or B, its 240. After 9/94 until 7/97, they are 260bhp, the forth leter is C. If its got a red top engine its an STI and will be 275bhp until 8/96 then the STI's whent up to 280bhp the latter is a conservative estimate, in Japan they arnt alowed to 'advertise' anything over 280, late STI's are nearer 300 than 280. 0-60 is abit varied but i know that on paper aleast, a 280 bhp sti type R will do it in 4.2 ish in standard form. It depends alot on what gearbox it has, as Type R's and type RA's have very short gears but they have a higher red line than normal WRX's because of the STI red top engine, these are also dearer to insure than standard WRX's for obvious reasons. I would think that a 260bhp WRX would do 60 in about 6 secs ish. You could get an early one for the money you want to spend but be carefull!

Tiff Needell for Top Gear did 5.2 with a standard 208bhp MY97 UK turbo. With 260 it will be quicker than a equvilant PPP UK turbo. A P1 was promoted as 4.66 0-60 with 276bhp so I would have said very close to 5 if not just below it with 260bhp.

What I was told, anyway, was that the '95 model WRX and WRX STi are both 260. BTW that's PS not BHP - the BHP value is 256.
Tazman has (or had last time I saw him) a '95 WRX wagon, and I have a '95 WRX STi wagon (which is a V2 STi). He reckons both are 256BHP though his seems faster (probably the driver!). I think there are some models in that year that have 276BHP (280PS) - you should look at the SIDC's excellent FAQ webpages for info.
The official 0-60 figure for my car is 5.2sec.

240PS MY94 WRX 4 door will be around 5 seconds or just over. These figures arent recommended to be reproduced unless you have shares in a clutch and gearbox company or a big budget.
Puts a tremendous amount of force through the transmission and do it enough and it will break .

Hi,
I posted a wee while ago asking for info and got a great response ,thank you all.
Anyways, I decided not to buy the car in question BUT have now slung down a deposit on a very nice Import '95 silver WRX with Prodrive Spoiler and splitter.
Only thing is though - the VIN number on the plate inside the left wing does not have a 15 character VIN, it is formated "GC8 - nnnnnn" ( 6 numerical digits ).
Could anyone advise if this is normal for a Jap Import ?
Again, many thanks in advance
