Why is this happening??????????????????
#2
Over the past 3mths i have been getting approx 240miles per tank of Optimax in my MY99 UK Turbo (decat centre, blitz BB, induction kit). However in my last 2 tanks i have got at least 280miles. Now i am not driving my car any differently, and there's been no service recently or anything like that!
I'm not complaining as the bloody thing costs me a fortune in petrol, however i dont want there to be a problem with my motor!
Can anyone shed any light??!

i used have an SLK. when i switched to optimax very occasionally that used to happen, i'd suddenly go from a very constant 300 per tank to 350.
never understood and only happened on optimax.
i did 70k miles without any faults.

Can't shed any light on the original question, but it is interesting to note the following (from www.shelloptimax.co.uk):
"Will Shell Optimax affect my fuel economy?
Customers in other countries where we've introduced similar fuels have reported fuel consumption benefits. And the West Midlands Police, who tested Optimax in their in their vehicles, noticed an improvement in fuel economy alongside the performance benefits of the fuel. So while we are not claiming fuel economy improvements in all cases, there is every reason to believe that many customers will see a benefit. This is because Optimax removes performance-sapping deposits from the engine as you drive. "

I'm with you Dunc, 280-320 most of the time on an MY01 but sometimes 250 miles doing the same type of driving, i only ever use Optimax.
It is definately something to do with the fuel, not the use of the loud pedal.

Don't want to cause unnecessary panic here but mine did this as a result of MAF failure (my99 also )
Was under-fuelling like mad then piston no.2 went boom
With you saying you have an induction kit fitted I would a bit concerned.
Good luck and hopefully you are just getting better mpg

I suppose it could be running a bit lean due to the MAF sensor under reading, however there are loads of other things that can affect petrol consumption!
Something as simple as changing tire pressures can affect the MPG, as can the weather.
Having said that, it couldn't hurt to get the MAF checked, as it can be pricey if it gives up completely

Dunc,
you may have gotten use to driving using the torque in midrange rather than downing it a gear, its quite amazing how much this will save on your fuel bill
Tony (MY00 PPP and always around 340miles out of a tank on long journeys )

you must also take into account the recent weather we have been getting it has been a lot warmer the past couple of weeks less cold air going into the intercooler maybe ??.

No, Chaps, no. No-one, but no-one, gets an unexpected 16% leap in fuel economy without there being a substantial reason (other than doing Lands End to John O'Groats by motorway at exactly 50mph!). 16% drop - yes trackday, hooning or general over enthusiasm, but 16% better - no.
Dunc, you're right to be concerned, and right to seek a reason!

The weather has improved. Its hotter hence the air is less dense, hence you get less into the cylinders, hence you need less fuel to burn with it, hence you get more mpg
I usually get 280-320 on SUL - sounds to me like you've learned to control the right foot

I have also been getting flutuations in power occasionally around 3500-4000rpm when accelarating quite hard the power can sometimes dip and then pick up. Could this be anything to do with the MAF sensor??!

...... and the fuel, being less viscous, swirls more easily to the edge of the tank when cornering.... While your explanation is, of course, impeccable, SB, it won't account for 16% IMNSHO. And if Dunc had taken his foot off the Loud Pedal, I'm sure he'd have said so by now! In 4 years of Scooby ownership, with being sufficiently sad to calculate my fuel consumption pretty well each time I fill up, I've been struck by how consistent it is (except when hooning, when it goes down ). I've NEVER had anything remotely like 16% better, even with the STi, which is more sensitive than were my previous classics.
Cheers

Hmmm,
Have you been hooning it around town and then started driving economically????
I drive moderatly eco friendly (mainly town driving) and have some fun and have a good blast at the weekends and I average 23mpg and with a 60litre tank that means i get about 303 miles to the tankful!
Did a test a few weeks ago and drove as economically as i could on one tank and got an average of 27mpg = 356 miles to the tankful!

I'm with Phil Harrison on this one.....
Something seriously ain't right for your fuel consumption to decrease by that amount.......if you haven't noticeably altered your driving style and had no servicing or repairs done to the car.
Hot weather... pah

Thanks for the support Si..... even more unusually it has INcreased according to the first post, not DEcreased
Dunc: let's have this right.....you're saying you used to get around 240 to the tank but you can get 310 on long motorway trips (by implication, not driving 'specially economically nor 'specially fast). Now, suddenly, without changing anything, this has changed to 280 (and still 310 long distance)
Sorry - it still sounds moody to me. But such a change will NOT be down to such things as warm weather and my advice(and that of many others)in answer to your question remains - get your car checked!

in the MG i normally get 20mpg but recently up to around 24mpg over the last few weeks. why? well, only thing i can think off is warmer weather and i don't use the choke for very long once started. obviously with the impreza the fuel injection will do this...
either that or you changed your driving style - type of trip etc?

Phil- i dont reckon it is down to warm weather etc and am gonna get my car checked! My first post isnt referring to long distance journeys just normal stuff therefore i get 280ish miles!! On a long trip however, at the mo i get about 310ish miles!- everyone knows you get more miles on a long trip so therefore i am not contradicting myself!!
Dunc.
"Er..... compare that with your first post Dunc !
Phil"- <This is the post i am referring to by the way!!>
