just had a good offer made on my 01 wrx with bits and bobs done and am seriously thinking about taking it and getting a civic type r..i know they aren't as good on performance but running costs are a lot lower...don't look as good either imo.
anyone any views.

crow,
im in very similar position, really cant choose between them at the mo. either a x plate scooby or a 52 plate CTR. hmmm, no doubt scooby will cost more
i have test drove both and they are both big fun and very good cars, the biggest factors for me are
Scooby = 4wd, turbo, always wanted 1
CTR = better creature comforts, cheaper servicing, VTEC is a bit mental , less nickable, cheaper insurance
If u not drove a CTR yet id try it, u might be suprised (**** in rain tho

The Type R 'supposedly' handles better (in the dry of course), the comparison is of course made with the STI8 and not the classic. Apparently you have to really rev 'em to get the best out of them, one I'd like to make is that you've got a lot more options to modify a turbocharged car.
I think buying a Type R would be a bit of a downgrade, then again I am a biase scooby owner.

I'd go for the Type-R if i was you, the money you save on running costs you can put abit of that back into modding the CTR!
Servicing is lower, wont need to change ur tyres in sets of 4...while still getting great performance out of a great sounding car (have u heard a CTR when being nailed?).
Dunc.
ps. this is coming from a Scooby owner by the way!

Kimera,
I've read various reports here and then, also did you wtach the top gear episode, the Type R clocked a quicker track time. It was also reviewed in Top Gear magazine, it pointed to better handling of the Type R as well.

Drive em both, I didnt like the fact that you had to rev to 6,000 rpm on a VTEC engine before it started to move. An NA motor is not going to match a turbo for torque unless you have serious ccs

thanks for all that..now i'm even more confused...had a test drive in the ctr over the weekend and they are very good....wife's comments were:-
"you aren't selling the scooby cos you've just spent all that money on the ecu upgrading and you'll be pissed off with it in 2 months and wanting another scooby!"

when you test drove the civic did you do any length on a motorway ??. I drove one for a "while" on the millbrook and the motorway "droaning" annoyed me fantastic on the little quick parts though.
as for servicing dont bank on the honda dealer being much cheaper than a scoob main dealer hourly labour charge is pretty much the same. Mother in law has hondas swapped from ford a few years back and they are stll gripping about the service costs.
granted fuel and insurance will be lower, and tyres hmm not to sure as I would expect a hard pushed ctr to burn fronts vfq and swapping the rears to front probably brings it back into 4 wheel scoob swap time.
as for tuning, well where is your local spoon centre ???. dont mean to diss the ctr but you are dropping a few leagues here and the amount of money you will lose by chopping in the scooby the mpg in the ctr will not make up for it.
KEEP the sccob you know it makes sense

CTR is a practical and fun runabout.
If you are going to buy it and modify it, forget it. VTEC is great at taking a domestic engine and turning it into a racer....but they really do take the engine to the limit...you can't get much more out of it without silly mods (e.g. NOS). They are great cars, but if you want more power, get something with a turbocharger.

had a really good think and another look this am...and wife just told me about 1/2 hour ago that she's gone and got herself pregnant so it looks like i'll have to keep the scoob cos it's a 4-door family car!
