I have till Friday to decide , so who did and who didn't have the extended warranty. Anyone not have it and regret it?
My engine and turbo are only 15k old, so i wouldnt have thought i needed it... but sods law might strike....
Interested to see actual numbers of people who did and didnt...
thanks,
Andy

I DIDN'T buy it - I couldn't face the bill right after the 45k cambelt service.
Sod's law may, of course, prove that it was a false economy, but the car has been pretty reliable so far - plus I figured that I've given Subaru UK more than enough of my hard-earned cash already.

Maybe this will help make up your mind
PS Total bills for gearbox and engine = £5,260.34
Oh and those are the larger bills but I haven't included wheel bearings/discs/pads etc etc
OH and the car was fully inspected prior to me buying it and had FSSH
Providing it is not thousands over the 60k the dealer will happily take your money.

If your car has covered 60k miles I don't think you'll be able to extend your warranty.

Are you sure about the 60k thing??
I've just taken out a two-year extended warranty on my MY00 as the standard 3-year warranty has expired. On the paperwork I received from Subaru my new warranty covers me for a period of 2 years OR up to 60k miles, whichever occurs first.

How well do you get on with your dealer? The reason I ask is that some dealers will dismiss most thing if you are on the extended warranty, however if you get on well with your dealer then they can be very reasonable when it comes to warranty repairs and the like.

You can extend after 60k it just costs more. "Unlimited mileage" option.
I think i AM going to have it. This month my car is going to cost me my entire month's wages - service, warranty tyres and rear brake discs + pads. Still it makes me

On average you must be better off not buying any sort of warranty. On average you pay for expensive repairs (because they're done at a main dealers rather than a cheaper independent) and a share of the administration costs. Take a chance, the odds are well in your favour.

Agreed - especially since you then get to go to independent dealers for servicing as well, so there's another saving. If you have the extended warranty, you have to continue to use main dealers for servicing (right?)

AFAIK yes i do have to stick with Subaru dealers. But then on ringing round for my 60k service they didnt seem to have much difference.
Infact the labour cost for where i am going is £44/hr as apposed to £55hr at the one garage.
I also found there wasn't much saving on the cost of my rear discs + pads.

Not for me. Being forced to pay 60/hr labout at an authorised dealer to keep it going put me off.
That and the fact that the warranty doesn't cover things like the cambelt snapping and wrecking your engine. Even if you've kept to the service intervals.
As for breakdown cover, I used Tesco vouchers and joined the RAC for 20 quid.

I did not get an extended warranty. Did not seem to be worth it when I was being quoted near £400 a year for the privilege. If something is going to go wrong it's gonna go wrong, I deal with it when it happens!

I extended mine the same week as I had the 3 year service and glad I did. Paid £384 and within a couple of days the cam tensioner went. Cost of replacing that plus new cam belt and labour was greater that I paid for the extended warranty!!!
Had a door panel changed since, due to the arm rest breaking.
I think it was money well spent IMHO
Cheers Phill

Bloody hell! That IS low-mileage!!!
You never know though - seems the more expensive stuff goes wrong before 30k miles..
I renewed today - wasn't happy that the figure they had quoted me (£385) was WITHOUT VAT, so it came to over £440. Still, its peace-of-mind...

do it!
i never got my my97 back (went in 2 weeks ago but wont be ready before the sti8 delivery on wed ) at 5 + 1/2 years old subaru have signed off 4 pistons + air flow meter + full engine rebuild, all for my £348 warranty cost! (which runs out tonight ) , warranty can be extended over 60K, mine being 53K but costs more and i can confirm this from the dealers mouth! , to me with the expensive nature of these cars i would not drive one worth more that £6K without it!
Also - the dealer should want to do warranty work as subaru pays them the labour to do it and gives them the parts! Don't be fobbed off as subaru sent an inspector out over mine and signed it off (even with minor front panel damage)

I would strongly advise anyone owning a 60k miles car to take out the warranty if possible.
I've had my june '99 model from new and it was leased for the first 3 years on a full maintenance/20k miles per year contract. W£hen the term was up, I couldn't bear to let it go back so i bought it. I thought about not taking out the extended warranty, seeing as I knew the car and it was fully serviced, and maintained regardless of cost by a Subaru main agent under the terms of the lease.
Last august bank holiday I had to do a lot of miles:
Milton keynes -Edinburgh -Milton keynes -Coningsby,Lincs -Holbeach, Lincs -Cadwell Park -Holbeach, Lincs -Milton keynes.
I checked the oil before I left home on this weekend trip of more than 1200 miles as the car had now covered 62000 miles & it was some 2 months since the last service.
Just west of Peterborough a frighteningly loud knocking sound started as I was accelerating out of a roundabout. Pulled over, (no oil light had been on, or the "check engine" sign), and checked the oil. NONE.
The new short engine cost the insurance company around £6,000!!
I've still got 21 months of the warranty remaining and I've recently had the electric window switch gear changed. I think the £500ish that the warranty cost was quite a good investment.
