Hi all,

My MY03 WRX is booked in for its 1000 mile service next week (900miles so far) and I have noticed two things whilst running it in.

Firstly there seems to be a whine from the transmission between 50 and 80 MPH which is loud enough to be noticable on dual carriageway driving, dipping the clutch and letting the revs fall has no effect, just makes it more noticable (less engine noise) it sounds like transmission rather than wind noise to me.

Secondly, when the engine is cold (first 5-10 mins) there is a quite pronounced whine from the turbo as it spools up between 2 and 2.5k rpm (I keep the revs below 3k until the engine reaches normal operating temp) this whine sounds like a police siren in the distance as you let the revs rise and fall driving in traffic, if fact I had a passanger in the car who was trying to spot the old bill behind us.

My question is are both these things normal with the WRX or should I mention them to the dealer at the service? By the way this is my first Scoob, and first Turbo.

Thanks for any response.

Tom

The first thing i cant say Ive noticed on my MY03 although im mainly going no faster than 70-ish during running in.

The second thing might not be specific to your car as I think something similar happens with mine (although its not as prominent).

Not much help Im afraid.

First noise - this is probably your tyres, as this is about all you can hear at those speeds.

Second noise - no idea !

I have a MY03 STi and had a rather nasty noise above 200kmh (~120mph), although it did occur a few times at lower speeds (~100mph)! I asked the dealer and he said it was the door surrounds vibrating in the wind (didn't sound like wind though!). Apparently its a known problem (since MY01 Impreza's) here in Germany due to autobahn speeds, the dealer just glued down the door surrounds and now the problem is fixed! Could be this for your first problem!

As for the turbo whineing, I'm on my third scoob now and I've never experienced that, although you can certainly hear the turbo spinning up more when the engine is cold! Is it really bad or are you just paranoid that somethings wrong?

Thumbs down

Diff/final drive, if it's still there when you dip the clutch.

You can get this if you've gone too fast over a hump back bridge and got air 'rally stylee' or so I'm told.
