firstly thanks to all the replies to my post re-piston slap
i took the car to dealer and left it overnight so they could hear it from cold.
The next day they actualy admitted they could hear a problem .....!!!!!!
i picked the car up and am having to take it back on tuesday to leave it overnight again for a engine man to come down from the uk warrenty place on wed morning
So they admit there is a problem and car is under warrenty but they are telling me that they are going to be authorised to strip engine and then another warrenty man will inspect stripped engine and if he finds piston problem then they will carry out warrenty repair....BUT..... they say if its not a piston problem then i must pay to have engine rebuilt.........
Am i being stupid??????
I said engine had noise and they agreed, if they say its inside engine and strip it down and find nothing surly its not my fault its there incompitence as engineers ????
I cant afford to be stuck with a bill to rebuild an engine at subaru labour charges.
please please any advice would be very gratfully received
many thanks car is my98 subaru sport 2.0 (non-turbo)

This is a typical warranty "catch 22" situation. Any warranty company I've come across does the same - you have to authorise the engine strip down (or whatever it is) & if no fault that is covered by the warranty is found you've gotta pay to put it back together again. The best thing I can suggest (& I'm not an expert so don't quote me on this) is if the garage are so sure as to suggest to you what they believe the problem is, get them to put it in writing. If then it comes to th worst you can argue to the waranty company that you only authorised the engine strip on the "expert" recommendation of the garage & therefore they should pay. Be warned though, that the Waranty co. have nothing to lose so you'll be the one in the weeker negotiation / arguing position. Best of luck getting it sorted though.
