I have today had a Scoobymania AP Racing clutch fitted to my car, and am currently in the process of getting used to it!
The bite is much sharper. Less forgiving, but not as bad as I was expecting it to be based on what I'd heard from others.
A couple of questions;

Besides the fact that it can take more power comfortably, what other benefits can I expect?
Will it allow faster getaways?
Will it put more stress on the transmission?

My last clutch lasted 47,000 miles including countless track days and Pod runs.
Can I really expect this one to last longer?

Sorry for sounding a bit naive, but it was all fitted in a bit of a rush as my old clutch was slipping quite badly and I needed to sort it out before Donno.
I just haven't put the research in that I would have liked, but AP was an obvious choice considering how pleased I am with the brakes.

what type of AP clutch is it. cintered, ceramatalic or organic. one plate or two?

 

That was very kind of you to observe that Mr Baron Knight.

On my own account the original Exedy clutch lasted 6000 miles in my 22B.

The 22B AP clutch was still going strong after 29,000 miles before my car blew up!

However Richard Squires 22B is still going strong on the original clutch as:

a) He is a skillful driver.
b) I am used to the ******* original exedy clutch!

 

It probably feels sharper as the last one was so well worn?

Stef's AP Racing clutch is an uprated load single plate organic [1] clutch with a load rating of 310 lb/ft Torque.

It is capable of handling loads over that and is designed to maintain driveability without the normal heaviness and snatching which associated with paddle clutches.

[1] There is also a cerametallic clutch available with the same Torque rating.

sounds like the Group N pressure plate with the AP uprated organic plate then.

This is the spec i fitted to my cossie road car.

definately a heavier presure on the pedal, the bite will be much fiercer but not excesive in traffic.

It is much harder to slip than a standard clutch so due to the fact that most clutches die from wear during slipping, it should last as long as the standard one.

You have the potential to transfer more shock into the box with this clutch, but because you will still have the springs in the organic plate it will not be too much more. If you had fitted a paddle clutch plate then it would have been much worse from a point of view of traffic use and shock loading.

I think it is a very good choice for your application. Worked really well for me as an everyday car unit with about 8 track days/year on 350BHP.

I think the biggest danger will come from trying to slip it too much on high power starts, in this usage the pressure plate is more likely to distort and crack under high temperature. Avoid slipping it to much and you are laughing.

I am glad this topic has surfaced. My car is about to hit 45,000 miles and my clutch is also on the way out.
I was considering buying an uprated clutch for my motor, question was how would it fare in busy London stop start traffic?
How does yours feel Stef? Is it too stiff dor tailback roads?

After beating the life out of your previous for 47k and 45k respectively, I'd say you are the better judges.

 

Anyone know if the 22B type UK AP clutch will fit an STi2?
And anything else I should know about?

Having just seen Mr Mike Rainbird down at Ahmed Bayjoo's garage I would expect no excuses at Donnie from "Stef the Cossie Killer with a dodgey clutch" this weekend!

I am not sure if Ahmed got the Cossie to 480 or 490bhp!

I will try and be at Donnie in my girlie RST.
I will be spectating and not even in a AWD!

Cheers for that. I can confirm after a days use that it is actually very good in traffic, a lot better than I was expecting.
Takes a little bit of getting used to, but you just have to be gentle with it.

My 'Cossie Killer' title will not be in any danger on Sunday because a) I won't be racing Mike, and b) 420bhp Cossies are not included anyway!
Mike has just said he'd like to follow me round and watch my antics from behind, seeing as he enjoyed them so much from inside the car last time. Other than that there will be no tom-foolery......
